This is a 3-day course for PhD candidates going on the economics job market in or after 2018: it teaches you how to build a clear, convincing job market paper from the ground up. The course teaches specialized techniques for the economics job market; these techniques are not available anywhere else and are only offered to a handful of job market candidates in the US.
The course will take place over 3 days. In that time, you will learn how to build a strong core structure for a job market paper: an argument that reveals the core contribution in just a few words; a structure that allows both experts in your field and others on the job market committee to see the most valuable insights of your work; individual paragraphs that allow readers to recall your key messages more easily. Along the way, you will also learn how to craft compelling messages for interviews and flyouts. (As you have probably guessed, this course is not about Engish, sentence style, grammar, or beautifying prose.)
When you should take the course: This course teaches tools, so the more time you have to practice applying them, the better you get. We advocate taking the course 2 years before going on the market. All you need is a 5-page proposal for a paper you intend to write. If you have some results or a first draft, even better!
