Are you a Colorado farmer or rancher or are you a school food services director who is interested in farm to school but unsure how to do it? For producers, selling to schools is a great way to ensure a consistent level of sales and predictability about what to grow/raise. For schools, buying from local producers guarantees you are offering the freshest, most nutritious school meals.
But farm to school is tricky to start - both for producers and for schools. To "grow the growers" selling to Colorado schools, a Farm to School (FTS) Producer Mentoring program has been established. This peer-to-peer program will match seasoned FTS producers or school food services with producers or schools interested in developing a farm to school relationship (the mentees). Mentors will provide 20 hours of guidance during the winter/spring of 2017 to ready you for a successful farm to school program in the 2017/18 school year.
This program is FREE* and available to any Colorado agricultural producer/rancher or school food services that is working with a new Colorado producer/rancher. Fill out this short application if you would like to be matched with a mentor.
If you have any questions, please contact Lyn Kathlene, lead staff to the Colorado Farm to School Task Force, at Lyn@SparkPolicy.com.
* The program is funded through a USDA FTS 2016 grant.
