  • Each training facility is advised that these items will need to be submitted to ETA along with the completed course approval application form:

    • A Complete Course Outline or Syllabus
    • Photos of the training facility and a website address
    • Equipment, tools, test equipment and consumables utilized during the specific training under review (including make, serial number, and sufficient per student pieces)
    • The credentials of each Instructor involved in the training under review

    • Course Approval fee

Once the completed application for course approval and all necessary documentation and fee has been received in the ETA office a notification is sent to the applying facility, which verifies that their materials have arrived. The materials are logged into the office and the review is begun.

The application is first reviewed for completeness. All materials are checked to determine that each required item is included. If a particular item has not been submitted or is incomplete the facility is notified and the approval is placed on hold until the application materials are complete.

When the materials under review have been checked and determined complete the application is reviewed by the ETA technical staff. These areas are thoroughly reviewed and either approved or not approved. The following procedures apply:

    • Does this course align with the ETA Certification Competencies in this particular technical field (ex: fiber optics, industrial electronics, renewable energy, basic electronics, etc.)
    • Is the course length sufficient to cover the necessary material in this technical field?
    • Do the facilities appear to be able to accommodate the number of students in a clean, comfortable and safe manner?
    • Does the equipment being used reflect current industry needs for training that will prepare a student for work in today’s workplace? Are there enough tools for each student?
    • Has the Instructor received necessary training in this field and does the instructor have work experience in this field?
    • Are the textbooks being used current for the technology advances in this field and are they recognized as providing reliable training in this area?
    • Are the supplemental media items current and reliable for this training?
    • Do the hands-on skills align with the required hands-on assessments for this ETA certification (if applicable)?
    • Does an acceptable amount of the total training provided include practical applications and troubleshooting in this technical field?
    • Past graduates may be contacted and asked for opinions regarding the type, method, safety procedures, effectiveness and completeness of the training they received.
    • Instructors providing training for hands-on certifications are required to pass the knowledge portion of the exam. Exam fees will be waived unless the instructor wishes to hold the ETA credential.

After the technical staff review, any areas of concern are addressed. The applying facility is contacted for clarification. When an area of concern is still under review the approval is then passed on to the Subject Matter Experts who belong to the Exam Advisory Board for that particular certification for further review and resolution. Discussion and clarification may take place at this time between the applicant and the Exam Advisory Board.

If the approval is not granted at this time the ETA staff and the Certification Exam Advisory Board may determine that an on-site course review is in order.

Upon completion of the ETA Course Approval an approved school may display the ETA logo on promotional materials or school catalogs and websites. If any changes are made to the approved course they must be submitted to ETA for further review. The Course Approval is valid for a period of four years after which an ETA approved school must resubmit an application for renewal including all updated materials pertaining to the approved course.

Each ETA approved school will receive a certificate suitable for framing indicating the particular ETA certification for which their training has been approved, a copy of the ETA logo in several sizes for use in promotional materials and website display, an official ETA congratulations notification and various other informational brochures and documents.

All Educational institution course approval files and all study guide/textbook approval documentation are on file and available for review or verification at ETA’s Greencastle, IN headquarters. These files will be held confidential unless release is requested by the submitting training facility.

  • STEP 9: Code of Conduct

Use the tabs above to quickly move between each section.
  • 1. I will improve my own technical proficiency for the sake of my own firm and my country.

    2. I will conduct myself in a professional manner - admitting and accepting errors when proven wrong - and refraining from changing the facts in an attempt to justify my position.

    3. I will never encourage, directly or indirectly, any gratuity, commission, tip or other extra financial benefit in connection with any work I perform, over and above the compensation agreed upon by my employer, or over and above the service charges established by my firm.

    4. I will avoid any conflict of interest or appearance of conflict of interest.

    5. I will assist fellow technicians in understanding both the technical, as well as the financial needs of the firm I am a part of, as I know that teamwork is the key to success.

    6. I will respect the fact that my customers, clients, and non-technician fellow workers may not easily understand the highly technical and complex nature of my work. Therefore I will have patience and will do my best to allow them maximum understanding of the difficulty and the need for each of my procedures, and within reason, when requested, explain use and/or operation of the products I service.

    7. I will display my licenses, certification and other diplomas as marks of professionalism for public recognition.

    8. I will undertake only those assignments for which I have been properly trained and qualified, and will request help, without hesitation, for those which I am not qualified.

    9. I will not misrepresent my firm or my own credentials and qualifications, nor will I downgrade those of my fellow technicians or competitors.

    10. I will perform the duties of my job with complete fidelity and honesty. I will not use my certification in a misleading manner, and I will make claims regarding this certification only with respect to the scope for which certification has been granted.

    11. I will safeguard trade secrets, never revealing facts, data, or information obtained in connection with services rendered, without prior consent of the client or my employer, except as authorized by law.

    12. I will not improperly offer to, or obtain work, by way of commissions, or otherwise make an offer to pay a client or prospective client in order to obtain work.

    13. I will have due regard for the physical environment, for public safety, health and well-being. If my decisions are overruled, I will notify my employer, client, and/or other such authority as may be appropriate.

    14. I realize that I must give back some of what others have given to me. Where feasible I will accept cheerfully, to the best of my ability, positions on advisory committees of my school, membership in my professional association, or in other activities, doing my share to raise the level of income, knowledge, proficiency, skills, and public understanding and respect for my profession.

I5. When I can no longer abide by these principles, I shall consider seeking a different profession.

    16. If something occurs during the period of ETA certification that makes it impossible or dangerous for me to continue performing the tasks for which I was certified, I shall notify ETA of the change of situation to determine if continued certification is in the best interest of ETA and/or the industry.

    17. I will not use the certification in such a manner as to bring the certification body into disrepute, and will not make any statement regarding the certification which the certification body considers misleading or unauthorized.

    18. I will discontinue the use of all claims to certification that contain any reference to the certification body or certification upon suspension or withdrawal of certification, and to return any certificates issued by the certification body.

I have read and I agree to abide by the above ETA® International Code of Conduct.
