The editors of Sanctuary, literary and arts journal of the SRHC, invite student applicants for the journal’s editorial review board. We are hoping to bring 6 student reviewers, two for each of our three submission categories (poetry, prose, art), on board from as many different honors institutions, giving preference to first responders. To apply for this position, please read the description of Tasks and Expectations below and fill out the application form that follows.
Tasks and Expectations
The work of reviewing and voting on submissions for Sanctuary takes place during the months of March and April and involves two principle tasks:
(1) reading or, in the case of images, viewing all the individual works submitted in one of the three categories thoughtfully enough to be able to cast, in the case of each work, a meaningful vote whether or not to accept it for publication;
(2) attending, by phone-in or Skype, the meeting (occasionally a second one is required) at which the submissions in your genre that have received mixed reviews (i.e., such that their acceptance-status cannot confidently be determined by a mere tally of reviewer votes) get discussed live and re-voted on.
The first of these tasks can involve 50 to 100 poems, 20 to 50 stories, or 30 to 60 images depending on how great or small the number of submissions. Meeting attendance, the second of the tasks, is important because invariably there are submissions about which one or two reviewers feel strongly enough that they’re able to convince fellow voters to rethink their initial assessments. Review meetings typically take place on a weeknight or weekend in April, and we try our best to keep them short but rarely succeed in doing so.
