  • Please read about the breed to make sure if a Malamute suits your lifestyle.  Here are very honest descriptions of Alaskan Malamutes:

(CHAAMP does not endorse Michele Welton or her use of water spray as a “correction” method).

Please answer each question or check the box letting us know that you wish to have further discussions on the topic. We appreciate your time and attention.

  •  Fence or No Fence = No problem

These questions help us understand your current home structure. We can discuss options like using a tennis court, long leads with a harness, etc.

  •  Describe Your Household

  • Is anyone in your household allergic to animals or dog hair?
  • Do you intend to have cats, rabbits, ferrets, or other small furry critters in the future? We want to ensure we find a Malamute that is for example cat-friendly.

  • Previous Malamute(s) History

If you never had an Alaskan Malamute, no problem. We can tell you all about them.

  • Do you currently or have you ever owned a Malamute?
  •  Veterinarian Reference

  • Do you currently have a vet? If so, please let them know that a CHAAMP volunteer will be calling to check references. Thank you.

  • Do you agree to give give your Malamute flea/tick protection once a month?

  •  Training Your Malamute

  • Are you familiar with rewards-based dog training?

  • Are you willing to learn and practice the basic principles of force-free communication and dog handling?

  • We require pet guardians (owners) to take their Malamute to a minimum of 12 weeks of training. Puppies under 6 months are required a minimum of 16 weeks of training. Are you willing and able to make that time and monetary commitment? (We can provide options -- online training, local Petco-- and help you find a trainer.)

  • What method of learning do you prefer? Click all that apply.

  • Have you used a dog trainer in past?

  • What are your dog training plans? (We are happy to offer guidance & recommendations. Our website has links to find a trainer near you and how to find choose one.)

  • What are your expectations?

There are no wrong answers. We want to do our best to meet your expectations.

  • Will your Malamute be allowed on the furniture (sofa, couch, bed.) If you do not want the dog on your furniture, we will provide guidance on how to set you and your Malamute up for success.

  • Will your Malamute ever stay with other dogs who don’t belong to you? (extended family’s dog, friend’s dogs, etc.?)
  • Will your new Malamute be spending time with other dogs in any other context (social walks, agility or sledding, carting, etc.?)
  • Do you intend to take your Malamute to dog parks or doggie day care? (We do not recommend dog parks and day care can be tricky. Some dogs react negatively to Malamutes. Malamutes can also be picky about their dog friends and some display same sex aggression. Reading dog body language is critical when making new dog friends.)

  •  Malamute Preference

  • Are you interested in a specific CHAAMP Malamute?
  • Preferred Age Range (check all that apply)
  • Preferred Gender
  • THIS QUESTION IS REQUIRED BY STATE LAW: Have you, or anyone who will have close contact with your adopted Malamute, ever been convicted of animal abuse, neglect, or cruelty?*
  • * Adoption & Foster Acknowledgement *

    (1) I understand that CHAAMP Malamutes can never be allowed off-leash unless they are in a height-appropriate secured fenced-in area.

    (2) I understand Malamutes may develop same-gender dog aggression around the age of 2, especially when sharing a home.

    (3) I understand Malamutes blow their coat (shed excessively) twice a year and shed somewhat year-round.

    (4) I understand that invisible fencing is NOT an option for CHAAMP Malamutes. It does not protect Malamutes and may traumatize some.

    (5) I agree to keep my Malamute on heartworm & flea/tick preventative year-round, stay up-to-date on vaccines, and visit a vet annually for a check-up. If I need help, I will reach out to CHAAMP.

    (6) I understand that adoption is a lifetime commitment (10-14 years). However, if I cannot keep my Malamute, I will contact CHAAMP.

    (7) I will not use dominance, intimidation (verbal or physical), “corrections” or Alpha Rolls to control my furry companion. I will contact CHAAMP for assistance with behavior issues.

    (8) I will use a Y-shaped harness with a front clip connection for safety instead of using shock, prong, or choke collars. Martingale collars are acceptable for dogs that do not pull. If your dog pulls a Y-shaped harness is best.

    (9) I commit to using positive reinforcement rewards-based dog training and communication with my adopted Malamute.

    (10) I understand Malamutes are strong pullers and I agree to use humane equipment such as a Y-shaped harness to avoid pressure on the throat, which may cause thyroid issues.

    (11) I understand Malamutes naturally exhibit high predatory behavior towards critters such as cats, rabbits, squirrels, and small dogs, etc. and I will avoid or redirect my Mal with a high-value treat.

  • ADOPTION & FOSTER -- PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE STATEMENTS ABOVE.*

  •  FOSTER CARE

  • (1) As a foster parent, I have the first opportunity to adopt my foster.

    (2) If I choose to adopt, I will deliver the adoption fee and contract to CHAAMP within 24 hours of making the verbal commitment.

    (3) I understand that CHAAMP will only provide vet care if I (1) contact CHAAMP for pre-approval and (2) use one of our participating vets with a rescue discount. If I use a vet WITHOUT CHAAMP's approval, I agree to incur the expense.

    (4) I understand that CHAAMP is not responsible for damage to my home caused by a foster dog. CHAAMP recommends the use of a crate or a secure kennel/enclosure when your Malamute is not supervised.

  • PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE STATEMENTS 1-4 ABOVE.

  • BY SENDING THIS APPLICATION, I declare that the above is true to the best of my knowledge and ability. I authorize the Veterinarian listed above to release information on the health care of my current and/or prior pets.  I agree to hold harmless CHAAMP, its Board of Directors, volunteers, and/or any agent carrying out duties on behalf of CHAAMP, from any and all actions, lawsuits, claims and demands which I now have or may hereafter have, arising out of, or in any way relating to, any and all injuries and damages to both person and property and also any and all injuries and damages that may develop in the future, as a result of or in any way relating to my adoption of a dog from CHAAMP.

Please re-read your application and make sure you’ve answered each question.  Incomplete applications may cause delays. Thank woo for understanding!

  • About CHAAMP

  • CHAAMP is a rescue organization member of the Pet Professional Guild. CHAAMP Malamutes use martingale collars and (Alpine Outfitters) Y-shaped harnesses. A Malamute that pulls can break a martingale collar.

Rescues have already been let down by humans, we wish to nurture a kind and peaceful transition into their new home & life with you. We are happy to talk with you and answer questions.

We do our best to practice force-free and rewards-based methods to train and care for our Malamutes. We find these methods help all dogs build healthy communication and relationships with humans. We are committed to learning and welcome you to join us on this journey.

We follow the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) position statements on Humane Dog Training, Positive Vet Visit, and Dominance
