Physical inactivity is a serious threat to the health and well-being of our kids. Children who are overweight from the ages of 7 to 13 may develop heart disease as early as age 25. Additionally, obese children are twice as likely to die before age 55 when compared to their slimmer peers. Children who are physically active daily have fewer school absences, higher academic achievement, higher self-esteem, and fewer behavioral problems.
I support having all students participate in physical education classes, even if they participate in after school sports. I also favor having schools incorporate physical activity throughout the school day through elementary school recess, physical activity breaks, physical activity clubs, and other special events.
