Professional/standard editing
For professional book production, we always recommend a professional edit. We also recommend a proofread once the book has been typeset (formatted into pages). These are minimum requirements for bookstore distribution and media reviews. Only experienced, senior editors are used for this level of editing. Rates vary from 25c per word to 40c per word depending on the amount of work required and the subject matter.
Light editing
This level of editing is recommended for manuscripts that have already been edited and are in generally good shape, but require an additional check and polishing. Experienced, senior editors are used. Rates vary from 18c to 25c per word depending on the amount of work required and the subject matter.
Budget editing
This is ONLY recommended for authors who have a very limited budget and do not require bookstore distribution or media reviews. It is best suited for personal projects and/or private distribution. Junior to mid-level editors are generally used. Rates are usually around 15c to 18c per word.
Proofreading
Ideally your manuscript should be edited, proofread, typeset, and proofread once again. However, due to the limited budgets of most self-publishing authors and lower sales volumes, the manuscript is often proofread only once. You can choose to do it after the manuscript has been edited or after the first set of pages has been typeset and formatted. A different person is always used for proofreading to ensure a new, fresh set of eyes. Professional rates vary from 13c per word to 20c per word depending on the subject matter.
Since editing rates are dependent on the amount of work required, we will need to review one to three sample chapters of your book.
