All FCC licensed amateur radio operators are ARES eligible; you do not have to be an ARRL member to be an ARES member. You may participate from your home, a mobile/portable location, or an Emergency Operations Center. To be officially deployed, participate in an Emergency Operation Center, and field training exercises all ARES members must complete FEMA Independent Study courses (IS 100.b, 200.b, and 700.a) and complete a Washington State Emergency Worker Card application. Washington State Patrol background checks are conducted by Pierce County Department of Emergency Management before issuance of the Emergency Workers Card.
