Requirements and expectations for board membership:
1. Nominees ideally have been Humanist Celebrants or Humanist Chaplains in good standing for one or more years immediately prior to nomination.
2. Directors attend one regular in-person board meeting annually (in connection with the AHA annual conference when possible), and approximately four conference calls per year. All expenses related to board work are deductible within the limits of the IRS Code. Remote attendance is acceptable for the in-person meeting if necessary, but every effort should be made to attend, as there is real value in meeting in-person.
3. Directors are expected to give the Humanist Society their ethical, nonconflicting loyalty and direct sufficient volunteer energies toward it, avoiding the appearance of conflicts of interest or relationship.
4. All directors must be active and responsive on email and be computer and Internet savvy. Weekly consideration of Humanist Celebrants and Humanist Chaplains is done via email and Google Drive. Directors are expected to vote in a timely manner each week.
5. All nominees must read and understand the bylaws of the Humanist Society prior to acceptance of their nomination.
Application Process:
We have a limited number of vacancies, and submission of an application does not guarantee appointment to the Board of Directors. Applications will be reviewed by the Boards of the Humanist Society and the American Humanist Association for approval. A Board member or staff may reach out for additional information.
Thank you for your interest in serving the Humanist Society and the larger humanist community.
