Commitment: 10 hours a week, 10 weeks out of the summer
Payment: $600.00 Stipend
Hope Gardens is looking for two Garden Managers to lead and operate Hope Gardens over the summer of 2018. The summer is the busiest time at the garden, and we need responsible individuals to take on this important position.
Responsibilities:
The following is a list of tasks that we expect garden managers to attend to:
- Plant, water, maintain, and harvest the garden. Upkeep and running of garden will be at least 7 hour commitment per week.
- Run volunteer workdays twice a week, one of those days being Saturday morning from 10am-12pm.
- Recruit volunteers to help out during garden workdays.
- Facilitate weekly staff meetings of garden managers and interns. Provide brief update of progress on current tasks.
- Host at least two community gardener – oriented events and maintain positive relationship with community gardeners.
- Coordinate with other Hope Gardens summer staff to implement programming in line with Hope Gardens mission to address food access in the Chapel Hill – Carrboro community.
- Perform administrative tasks for Hope Gardens, such as maintaining the email, calendar, and phone.
- Keep a log of activities to be submitted to co-chairs weekly.
- Lead summer evaluation and develop plans to continuously improve summer project performance.
Working Conditions:
Garden Manager is a physically active position. Managers must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, to bend at the knees and hips, and to lift at least 30 pounds overhead. Garden Managers spend the majority of their time outdoors in all weather conditions.
Requirements:
- UNC Chapel Hill student
- Access to a car (driving is required to and from the garden)
- Previous experience with gardening and/or leadership roles
- Previous experience working with volunteers and with community outreach
- Interest in food systems, environmental education, and sustainable agriculture
