Open space may be defined as land that is valued for natural processes, wildlife habitat, active and passive recreation, aesthetic beauty and other public benefits. Examples include forest preserves, greenways, parks, streams and river corridors, woodlands, wetlands and prairies within rural, suburban and urban areas. Open space can be protected or unprotected, public or private.
