One Mic Open is a small community of 20 high school youth who will develop as writers and performers. That means that if you are selected to be a part of One Mic Open, you will work with other incredible youth who are committed to improving their skills as writers and performers who will represent the city of Cleveland as positive artists interested in using their gifts toward improving the city. You will learn REAL skills to do REAL projects using writing, performance, urban sociology (why people/societies do what they do and how those things limit/enable access & rights to certain people), and socially just leadership as your foundation.
Being awarded a fellowship is a very honorable achievement & responsibility. It means that you will have responsibilities that you will have to meet (like a job), as well as be able to receive special benefits, such as free admission to certain events.
If you receive a One Mic Open fellowship, these are your basic requirements:
- Represent One Mic Open as a responsible leader, citizen, and public intellectual & artist.
- Meet at least twice a week after school: TUES and THURS from 5:00-7:30pm
- Participate in occasional weekend or evening Fieldwork events
- Attend & complete Rites of Passage activities.
- Complete and present a professional media literacy portfolio by the end of the program.
- Fully attend & complete the 28-week program from November 2018 – June 2019
- Students will be accepted no matter what their current GPA may be. But students must maintain at least a 2.5 G.P.A. for each marking period while participating in the Fellowship.
