Hospice Philosophy
Hospice affirms life. Hospice exists to provide support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice exists in the belief that through appropriate care and promotion of a caring community, residents and families will be free to attain a degree of mental preparedness that is satisfying to them.
Caregiver Code of Ethics
A caregiver is anyone who provides direct (Doug's House, Roosevelt Gardens, Highland Terrace or Community Housing staff and volunteers) or indirect (administrative and Top Drawer staff and volunteers) service to residents and their families. As a caregiver of the Project Transitions team, your primary goal is to provide care, comfort and programmatic support for residents and their families. In doing so, a caregiver must observe and comply with the code of ethics set forth in this document. If a situation is questionable, contact your supervisor. Any violation of this code is grounds for termination.
- A caregiver shall safeguard a resident’s right to confidentiality within the limits of the law. However, to ensure optimal care, all issues concerning the well being of the residents and their families should be shared with the Program Coordinator.
- A caregiver shall not discriminate regardless of resident’s race, religious practice, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation or political affiliation.
- A caregiver shall refrain from providing service while impaired due to the caregiver’s physical or mental health or use of medication, drugs or alcohol.
- A caregiver shall evaluate a resident’s progress on a continuing basis to optimize care and will make use of supervision and consultation as indicated by the resident’s needs.
- A caregiver shall avoid any physically or emotionally intimate relationship that may be seen as exploitative or sexual, with a resident, any persons living in the resident’s household, lover, partner or any other family member of the resident.
- A caregiver shall not act as attorney, power of attorney, witness or executor for any resident or family members.
- A caregiver shall not accept gifts, financial or otherwise, from residents or family members.
- A caregiver shall respect and promote the right of the resident to self-determination and assist residents in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals. This is limited when residents’ actions pose a serious, foreseeable and imminent risk to themselves or others.
