• 2017 John Gardner Fellowship Application

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Seniors graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, in the current academic year (December or May) are eligible to apply.

    • The Fellowship welcomes applications from any major field of study and from a wide variety of public service experiences. Applicants only need to share a common commitment to public service.

    • Be a US citizen or qualify for the Health Insurance Marketplace. Click here for information on Health Insurance Marketplace eligibity. 

     

    Selection Criteria:

    Applicants are judged according to the following criteria:

    • Demonstrated commitment to public service
    • Record of academic accomplishment
    • Maturity, personal integrity, and sense of responsibility
    • Creativity, energy, and initiative
    • Leadership potential: the ability to inspire others to action

     

    Selection Process:

    • Step 1: Complete and submit the application (Parts A, B, C and D), which will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. Please be prepared to attach your Essays, Resume, and Transcript(s) as one PDF document. To view Essay, Resume, and Transcript(s) requirements before continuing, clik here.
    • Step 2: Top candidates will be contacted and invited to a personal interview.
    • Step 3: Fellows will be selected by the end of March. Each candidate will be notified directly of the Selection Committee’s decision.

    In 500 words or less per prompt, answer each of the following three questions to explain why the Gardner Fellowship Program should invest in you as a future public service leader. The selection committee pays particular attention to these personal statements. Please answer all three questions. 

    Essay 1

    What issue do you care most deeply about and what are examples of your ideal nonprofit or government fellowship placement? What would you like to learn from a mentor who is an outstanding leader in your field of choice? 

    Essay 2

    How does a Gardner Fellowship build on your Berkeley experience and inform your future career?

    Essay 3

    John Gardner spoke of public service leaders as individuals who are optimistic, curious, open, and positive. How would you describe your leadership qualities to a potential placement or mentor? 

     

    2. Resume

    Please attach a resume with the following categories. Your resume may be longer than 1 page. :

    1. Education (include all post-secondary education, relevant coursework, and research experience)

    2. Work Experience (begin with the most recent or current job and include dates of employment, the employer and/or business and/or supervisor's name, location, your title, and a description of your responsibilities)

    3. Activities and Leadership (include co-curricular activities, internships and self-initiated projects, e.g., with nonprofits, community groups, government, or electoral campaigns).

    4. Awards and Honors (include titles, descriptions and dates)

    5. Skills (include computer, language or other specialized proficiency)
