Children's Dance Education and Outreach Event Performance Application

Thank you for your interest in the Kern Dance Alliance Children's Dance Education and Outreach Event on November 15, 2023.

This special event benefits local children from the Bakersfield Homeless Center, CASA, Garden Pathways, Boys and Girls Club, and other organizations that serve socio and economically disadvantaged children by providing them with an afternoon of dance at one of Kern County’s most treasured theaters, the Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater.

What's so special about KDA's Children's Dance Education and Outreach Event?

Children from around the community get to experience being in a theater and watching a live performance, most for the first time ever! They get to learn about the history of dance and theater, as well as theater etiquette. The children's favorite part of the event is getting to interact with the performers. After performers paricipate in a live dance show, the children get an opportunity to ask the performers questions in our audience Q&A. Then, all the children get to learn a fun dance routine, taught by KDA and the performers. This is a full day commitment (12:00 PM-6:30 PM), but you will find that performers will feel so rewarded at the end of this experience.

PERFORMERS WANTED

KDA is seeking dancers and dance organizations to provide performances (minimum 1 minute- maximum 3 minutes) and to assist with the children's dance class. Solos, group numbers, diverse dances and techniques ranging from ballet to hip hop, cultural, folk, and social dances are all welcome to apply. There is no cost to YOU or YOUR organization, KDA simply asks for your volunteered time to make this event great!

A DAY OF SERVICE

The Children's Dance Education and Outreach Event is a day of service dedicated to our community children. KDA understands that this event may conflict with dancer’s school commitments; however, KDA has created an official waiver allowing dancers to take the day off from school. KDA recommends making accommodations with school teachers and administrators to submit work early.

Need community service? KDA will happily sign off on all community service requests.

Please provide us with more information about your choreography. Does the dance have a meaning or a theme? What inspired you to create this dance? How might your dance inspire/affect the audience? THIS INFORMATION WILL BE READ DURING THE PERFORMANCE PRIOR TO YOUR DANCE TAKING THE STAGE TO GIVE THE CHILDREN AN UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR WORK.*

The role of the performer is not only to dance for our audience, but also to be a role model and mentor to the children who attend this event. Performers will have a scheduled tech rehearsal time the day of the event. After all tech rehearsals, performers will learn choreography to be taught to the children and how to mentor our special attendees. This is a very rewarding experience for the performers. Not only do dancers get to share their love of dance with children who have never seen a live performance or been in a theater before, but they also get to view this opportunity as a community service experience. Without our performer mentors, this event would not be successful.

Lunch will be provided for all dancers and volunteers.

All performers are able to arrive to Fox Theater as early as 11:30am to attend tech rehearsal and take part in the Performer Mentor session, which consists of learning a dance to teach the children (all students will receive a KDA Community Service form to submit to their school)All performers are able to stay after the performance to take part in an audience Q&A, as well as mentor the children for the remainder of the event. Event will end around 6:30pm.At least half of my performers are able to stay for the entire day.Only able to participate during the dance performance.
