  • Polluted stormwater runoff is a significant contributor of pollution to the James River and its tributaries. Every time it rains, pollutants including sediment, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, bacteria from pet waste, and chemicals flow from our yards into local waterways. This stormwater pollution adversely impacts the health of our rivers and streams and threatens the health of people and wildlife.

River Hero Homes is a community of stewards that realize the first step to a cleaner James River starts at home. Every member of the James River Association’s River Hero Homes program receives a garden flag, sticker, membership card, discounts at local nurseries and garden centers, and a free one-year Family Membership to the James River Association.

Take steps to improve your home and become a hero for your community and river!

  • April Showers bring May Flowers! What better way to celebrate spring than by becoming a hero for the river? Join River Hero Homes by adopting easy, river-friendly behaviors right where you live, and you'll be entered to win a free rain barrel and assembly kit! Whether you pledge to plant natives, pick up pet waste, or conserve water, you can make a big difference for our waterways. Sign up to take the River Hero Homes pledge before May 2nd for your chance to win. Sincere thanks to our partners Lynchburg Water Resources, City of Charlottesville, City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities/RVAH2O, City of Petersburg, and James City County for helping us bring this program to our watershed!
