The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and the Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) work together to foster sustainable development in communities around the world, as well as support Compassionate Justice Initiatives in Canada by providing funding for yearly Synod Antipoverty Grants. When a gift is made to CLWR, a portion of the undesignated donation is forwarded to support the ELCIC Compassionate Justice Initiatives within each Synod.
The Synod of Alberta and the Territories receives and disperses these funds to assist church and society groups, in individual congregations and community organizations, in which members of our congregations participate; and is responsible for approving such projects that meet the criteria outlined below.
Applications must be received in the Synod office by December 15th, 2016 for the 2017 year.
The funds will be distributed by March 1st, of each calendar year.
Priority will be given to project proposals which:
- Build awareness on hunger and poverty issues as well as solutions through education, leadership development and advocacy.
- Focus on domestic hunger and poverty issues with priority given to:
- Food security (i.e. production, distribution, acquisition, nutrition, land use)
- Employment (i.e. job training, counselling, placement, child ca.re)
- Development (i.e. preventative and primary health care, water and sanitation, literacy, housing, social services, environmental issues).
- Are well planned in cooperation with, and build on, the social, cultural and spiritual resources of people who have access to limited material resources.
- Promote self-reliance.
- Operate in collaboration with other ecumenical and social services partners.
