Joe's Camp is a weekend retreat for kids ages 8-14 who have experienced ALS in their family. The camp will be held May 5th - 7th at Hickory Cove Bible Camp in Taylorsville, NC. This is a chance for kids to get away for some fun and get to know others who have also experienced ALS in their families. Volunteer Counselors are the key to the success of our camp! If you are interested in volunteering for Joe's Camp, please read all of the information below and complete the interest form. Once your interest form is received, you will be sent a formal application to complete.
Role Of Volunteer Counselor: Have fun and make this a memorable and special weekend for our campers! You will be working with a co-counselor with a group of 3-6 campers for the weekend. Specifically, you will have fun with the campers in your cabin, keep them safe by guiding them to follow the behavior expectations, get them to group activities and meals on time, and participate in all activities with the campers in your cabin.
Requirements to Volunteer: Applicant must be at least 16 years of age by May 5, 2017, have a clean criminal background and 3 favorable references. Camp experience is welcomed but not necessary.
Application Process: Once you have submitted the interest form below, The Joe Martin ALS Foundation will send you a formal application to complete. Our formal Application is due March 1, 2017. The application includes a portion to share why you are interested in volunteering at this camp, what you hope to give and gain from your experience, a request for three references, information for a criminal background check and your health information. You will also participate in an interview with Joe Martin ALS Foundation Staff. This process helps ensure we have the best and most qualified counselors working with our campers for the weekend.
Cost: There is no cost to volunteer at Joe's Camp. Your weekend will include all lodging, meals and activities. It does cost The Joe Martin ALS Foundation $250 per camper which covers meals, lodging, supplies and other associated expenses. If you would like to sponsor a camper to attend or learn how you can fundraise to send children to camp this year please indicate your interest below.
Dates and Volunteer Arrival and Departure Program: Formal Applications are due no later than March 1st. All volunteers will be asked to participate in a pre-camp training session in the Charlotte area a few weekends before camp. This training session will last approximately 2 hours. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 4:00 on Friday, May 5th. Closing Program and Family Cook-out will be at 12:00 on Sunday, May 7th. All volunteers are asked to participate in the closing program and family cook-out.
Location: Hickory Cove Bible Camp, 170 Ferguson Lane, Taylorsville, NC - This beautiful camp facility is located near Hickory, NC and offers hiking trails, lots of green space, indoor recreation buildings, campfire areas, scenic lake and more. Activities: Campers and Counselors will enjoy typical camp activities with their new friends such as hikes, crafts, games, camp fires and group activities. There will also be age appropriate activities to talk about ALS and honor the camper's person with ALS.
Camp Leadership: Joe's Camp will be coordinated and led by Joe Martin ALS Foundation Staff, Cabin leaders, volunteer counselors, activity coordinator and our camp nurse.
Accomodations: Campers and Counselors will be grouped in dorm styled cabins by age and gender. Each cabin has bunk beds, heat and air and bathrooms. There is one boy's dorm and one girl's dorm. Each dorm contains 3-4 large sleeping rooms with 7 bunk beds in each room.
Meals: Some meals will be prepared by the camp, but many will be provided by our community partners. Meals will include pizza, spaghetti, hamburgers and hot dogs, BBQ, sandwiches and other kid's favorites. Campers and counselors with food allergies will be accomodated. You will have an opportunity to share more on your dietary needs in the full application.
What to Pack: A full packing list will come with your application, but in general you will need to bring your own linens, towels, tolietries and clothing.
