New Credit Hour Policy effective as of Sept. 1, 2017
The Credit Hour Policy was developed by the Academic Senate’s Educational Policy Committee (EPC) in response to a requirement from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) that each institution it accredits provide a reasonable and transparent formula describing how course credits are awarded and is consistent with WSCUC’s Credit Hour Policy.
For classroom‐based courses, 1 unit is equivalent to 1 hour of classroom time and 2 hours of outside preparation per week during the 10‐week quarter.
- Classroom time is the number of class contact hours required each week and may include an instructor‐led lecture, discussion, or seminar.
- As an example, a 4‐unit course should have a minimum of 4 hours of classroom or direct faculty instruction or instructor‐led discussion (e.g. 3 hours of lecture and a 1 hour discussion section) and 8 hours of outside preparation each week.
- Most courses at UCSD are set up for 3 Hours of lecture or Seminar.
- A Justification of alternate distribution of classroom hours is required to to request for new courses to be set up with 3 hour lecture or seminar.
- Justifications are required even if the request is to modify a pre-existing course.
- If adequate Justification is not provided, then the course will be required to have a mandatory 1 hour instructor led section along side the 3 hour lecture, but if justification is provided then the course can be approved with 3 hour lecture/ seminar.
- Examples of previously used justifications for alternate Distribution of Hours can be seen below (you're welcome to use these as well):
1) The course does not require a fourth hour component due to the nature of the course. Rather than a fourth hour of lecture, students will need to spend additional time reading not just sociological works, but additional non/fictional literature in order to be prepared/participate in the three hour lecture
2) The course does not require a fourth hour component due to the nature of the course. Rather than a fourth hour of lecture, students will need to spend additional time each week for their assigned readings and relevant news reports.
3) The course includes three hours of seminar instruction per week and one hour of required on-line engagement of the readings with the instructor and classmates prior to the weekly seminar.
