Qualifying Criteria

Indicate the criteria by which you seek registration and complete the application section of this application. You must only complete the section that applies to you. If you are eligible for registration based on more than one criteria, chose one criteria under which you wish to register. If your criteria is education and work experience, you must complete both the education and work experience sections. If your qualifying criteria is certification, you must complete the certificationand work experience sections. With either qualifying criteria, the attesting attorney(s) must complete the attorney attestation form included with the application or evidence of other qualifying employment.

The applicant has obtained an associate's degree in paralegal studies or an equivalent paralegal certificate from an ABA Approved or institutionally accredited educational institution and has 4 years of substantive paralegal experience.The applicant has obtained a baccalaureate degree in paralegal studies from an ABA approved or institutionally accredited educational institution and has 2 years of substantive paralegal experience.The applicant has received a baccalaureate degree in any discipline from an accredited educational institution, has obtained a post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies from an ABA approved or institutionally accredited educational institution, and has 2 years of substantive paralegal experience.The applicant has received a baccalaureate degree in any discipline from an accredited educational institution, and has 4 years of substantive paralegal experience.The applicant is a PACE Registered Paralegal with the National Federation of Paralegal Associations.The applicant is a CORE Registered Paralegal (NFPA) or Certified Paralegal (NALA) and has 4 years of substantive paralegal experience.The applicant has received a high school diploma or its equivalent, has a minimum of 10 years of substantive paralegal experience, and has completed a minimum of 10 CLE credits, including two ethics credits, in the two years prior to application.The applicant has graduated from an accredited law school and has not been disbarred or suspended from the practice of law by any jurisdiction, and has a minimum of 2 years of substantive paralegal experience immediately preceding this application.

Work Experience

Attach additional sheets if necessary. A paralegal is defined by the Minnesota Paralegal Association as a person qualified through education, training, or work experience to perform substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily, but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer. This person may be retained or employed by a lawyer, law office, government agency or other entity or may be authorized by administrative, statutory or court authority to perform this work. It is not the intent of MPA to exclude any member of the legal profession whose job duties fit the definition of paralegal but whose job title is something other than "paralegal". Additionally, the term "substantive" shall mean work requiring recognition, evaluation, organization, analysis, and communications of relevant facts and legal concepts.

I have read the accompanying Minnesota Certified Paralegal Program policy, also included in MPA’s Policy and Procedure Manual, including the continuing education requirements and the Code of Ethics.
