EXPLANATION
A Makerspace is a place where students are encouraged to make, tinker, engineer, create, invent, design and wonder. We are intending to inspire our students to be makers instead of consumers. To move from being passive users to active creators. We are very excited to be holding our first Day Camp where we are inviting about 60 students in Year 5 and 6 from all around Toowoomba to gather in one place to have two full days of making!
The Day Camp is designed to give students who are gifted in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas the opportunity to be immersed in the design process. The students will have the opportunity to work with experts in the field and be exposed to cutting edge technology. It will give students the chance to work and collaborate with students from other schools in Toowoomba. Most importantly it will give students valuable time to explore, test ideas, find answers, solve problems and discover new ways of doing something. As part of the design process students will learn that mistakes, accepting risks and multiple attempts are a necessary aspect of learning.
There will be seven options with a Mission Possible flavor for the students to choose from.
* Makey Makey: Design a burglar detection system using a Makey Makey (http://www.makeymakey.com)
* App Creation – Create an app that will decipher codes, find clues in hidden locations, and ultimately locate all the pieces of the puzzle to save the day.
* Lego Robotics – Build and program a robot to move around a variety of obstacles, collect a package and deliver it to a specific location.
* Computer Game, Coding, Arduinos – Design a computer game where the supervillain tries to escape through a maze of dangerous obstacles
* Wearable Circuits - Create a wearable item of clothing or jewelry that can be used to send morse code
* Rube Goldberg Machine – Build a complicated contraption using chain events to deliver a secret message. (Check out some amazing Rube Goldberg Machines online)
* 3D Printing and Scanning – Create personalised tactical equipment.
Students will be allocated a place at the camp on a first in basis and/or their explanation for why they would like to attend.
