Job Description
The Sand Club is looking for an independent contractor to host beach volleyball tournaments, which will be referred to as a Beach Volleyball MC. The role of the MC involves: providing a lively music playlist prepared before the event for beach volleyball players, active on social media, being a "roadie" (setting up and breaking down equipment) an hour before check-in and after the event, making frequent announcements on the PA system, monitoring the schedule to ensure the event runs smoothly, understanding formats (pool play and bracketology) and announcing teams to their courts. The MC contract position is a weekend gig (Friday nights, Saturday mornings, Saturday nights and occassionally a Sunday.) To become a successful MC, candidates need to have the ability to make an audience feel at ease and create a good atmosphere, be skilled at public speaking, and have strong time management skills. This job would be well-suited to people who enjoy entertaining and have a great sense of humor.
Responsibilities
Days before an event, the MC will need to meet with the organizer to run through what’s expected from them, grab any prizes, understand the beach volleyball format and discuss the overall schedule.
One hour before the player check-in, the MC will need to set up the following equipment by themselves: tent (along with tent anchors), tables, table coverings, prizes, check-in materials, water cooler, first aid cooler, first aid box (sport tape, bandaides, etc), ball pump, PA system, music, net height, boundary lines, lining up antennas, throw out 4 volleyballs per court, flip scoreboards (when needed), umbrellas (when needed) and help watering courts.
During the event, the MC needs sharp organization skills to keep the tournament on schedule. The Sand Club will email players a review form after the event to see how well the MC started the event on time and stayed on schedule.
After the event, the MC will be responsible for breaking down the following equipment and putting back into storage: tent, tables, table coverings, prizes, check-in materials, water cooler (emptied), first cooler (emptied), first aid box, ball pump, volleyballs, flip scoreboard (when needed) and umbrellas (when needed). The MC will lock up storage and PA system. The MC will also be responsible for empting garbage cans and replacing with a bags as well as making sure restrooms are picked up and locked. The MC will shut the lights off, lock up keys and facility. The MC will be responsible for lost keys and any lost volleyballs or equipment.
Requirements
The MC must be 18 years of age with a fingerprint clearance card. All candidates understand that they are independent contractors and not employees, contracted for 7-hour shifts without a scheduled break. Candidates will need to be able to lift equipment by themselves as heavy as 60lb (like a pop-up tent) or maneuver onto a hand truck dolly. The MC will need to own and use their personal laptop at the event. The MC need a personal hotspot in order to access online applications and play music. The Sand Club will not reimburse for cell phone data or pay for any damage of personal property, like laptop or phone. However, The Sand Club will reimburse the MC for water and ice. The MC will need shoes outside the fenced area when retrieving volleyballs at the end of the shift or during the event. The MC will be required to sign a waiver of all risks of the tournament host.
Contract Wages
The MC will earn $150 or up to $250 for a 7-hour event. Wages will be determined before the event
