  • Human Hurt and Hope Fund Grant Guidelines Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina

A vision of Episcopalians in Western North Carolina – is a future with our shared resources re-directed to crucial ministries.

Funded from contributions throughout the Diocese of Western North Carolina in conjunction with the Centennial Witness Program, the Human Hurt & Hope Fund is a hallmark of this vision. Established to support new initiatives and innovative ministries, the Human Hurt & Hope Fund has empowered Episcopalians to address human need and suffering through hands-on ministries in our own communities.

Since 2005 the Human Hurt & Hope Fund has awarded more than $1.4 million in grants to parishes ministry within the Diocese of WNC that address issues of justice, poverty and marginalization, helping those at risk as we take seriously our baptismal vow of serving Christ in all persons.

The Diocesan Executive Council established the Human Hurt & Hope Fund Committee (HH&H) to evaluate all requests for funding. The HH&H Committee has developed the following guidelines for grant applications and dispersal of funds. PLEASE READ THEM CAREFULLY before preparing a grant application. Also attached are Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) which should also be reviewed. Close attention to both documents will enhance your experience and improve your funding opportunities with the Human Hurt and Hope Fund.

Questions concerning your grant submission can be directed to Carol Tannenbaum – 828-225-6656 or cfocarol@diocesewnc.org.

  • HH&H Funding Guidelines:

    1. All parishes of the Diocese of Western North Carolina and other Diocesan entities are eligible to apply for HH&H grants. It should be clearly understood that the grant must support outreach ministries in the geographical area comprised by the Diocese of Western North Carolina.
    2. Human Hurt and Hope Grants are intended to support new initiatives and innovative ministries in the Diocese of WNC. HH&H funded projects must involve Episcopalians directly in hands-on ministries that respond to human needs.
    3. Priority is given to grant applications that involve collaboration of multiple parishes and/or multiple community entities. Each entity must provide funding and volunteers to support the project.
    4. 4. The Human Hurt and Hope Fund typically makes grant awards in the amount of $5,000 per project; $3,000 if a second year is approved; and
$1,500 for an approved third year. For both the second and third year, a new grant application must be completed and submitted by April 15th. Grant requests for up to $25,000 (based on $5,000 per collaborating unit) may be considered for projects that show broader levels of partnership, have capability of replication in other settings, and show a concrete plan for continuation of the ministry beyond the support of the Human Hurt and Hope Fund.
    5. HH&H grants are awarded for one year. HH&H grantees may seek renewal annually for up to two more years. Exceptions may be made in special circumstances at the discretion of the HH&H committee. Renewal of continuing grants is contingent upon the submission of a NEW application along with a grantee report to include financial statements, project/ministry evaluation and evidence of continued project viability. Reports should be electronically submitted to the Diocesan office at
      sschwein@diocesewnc.org by April 15.
    6. The application should include the design of the project proposed for funding, including objectives, and anticipated impact. It should also include a listing of all parishes, diocesan institutions or other diocesan entities that are sponsoring the proposed project and all potential
sources of funding. The HH&H committee may request additional information.
    7. Please note that requests for funding for administrative costs are strongly
discouraged and may not exceed 20 percent (20%) of the grant request.
    8. The application should be submitted electronically.
    9. All project information must be provided within the application form.
    10. A letter from the parish rector, chairperson of the board of diocesan institutions, or chairperson of other diocesan entities (commissions, task forces, committees, etc.) indicating review and endorsement of the project must be included with the application.
    11. 11. After reviewing the applications, the HH&H committee will submit their recommendations to the Executive Council for consideration at their June meeting. The approved grants will be processed and checks mailed out no later than July 1 to the sponsoring parish office.
