The Ohio Climbers Coalition, in partnership with the Access Fund and Clark County Park District, will be having a large stewardship event at the Mad River Gorge and Nature Preserve in Springfield, Ohio on May 20th and 21st, 2017. The Clark County Park District has purchased several acres of property containing choice climbing cliffs. This purchase will add to the already several thousand feet of climbable cliffs and boulders currently owned by the Clark County Parks, and make the Mad River Gorge the largest climbing area in the state. Most of the routes will be bolted on the southside cliffs in time for the event.
On May 20th, the Access Fund Conservation Team will be at the Mad River Gorge for a day of volunteer work which will include trail building, staging area development, building of natural steps, general trash cleanup, and more. This will be a huge undertaking to get the park ready for climbing. Clark County is also creating a future camping area for climbers. For this weekend, there will be camping available for those wishing to camp on Saturday night, and we will celebrate the day's work with some live music, food trucks, vendors, raffles, and beer. Make sure to have cash or checks available for purchasing food and camping at the event.
Sunday, May 21st we will be formally opening up the park for climbing for those who volunteered on Saturday.
This is a free event, but to better organize the volunteers and ensure that those with previous experience are placed in the appropriate work groups, we request that you fill out this sign up form. We also have a mandatory volunteer waiver that needs to be completed before any volunteer work can be performed with the Ohio Climbers Coalition. Due to safety concerns, we are asking all volunteers to be 18 years or older at our event on Saturday as we will be working with heavy machinery, tools, and sharp objects which could be dangerous for younger participants.
