Among other responsibilities, board members play a key role in raising funds for our organization. It is an expectation of board service that you will introduce people in your sphere of influence to our work and invite them know and do more – as prospective volunteers, board members, staff, and donors. Our organization commits to providing you with the information and tools necessary for you to stand as a vocal and visible ambassador for our work.
Further, we expect every board member to make an annual financial commitment for each year of board service that represents one of the most significant donations you make each year. The vast majority of our Board sponsors a Scholar (at one of the levels) themselves, as well as supports the major annual Starfish events in some way.
Board service is a true commitment of time and energy. We estimate that board service could be a commitment of 4-8 hours each month - including, but not limited to:
- 6 meetings a year on Zoom (video call) for approximately 1.5 hours
- Additional meetings as needed for various Committee projects (Committees include Advancement, Governance, Finance, and Program)
- Talking to potential Starfish supporters, attending Starfish events, etc. as needed/possible
- Visit Ecuador, if/when possible
- Stay connected to our programming in Ecuador through virtual means (reading updates, social media, blog posts, etc.)
