COMMITTEES
ARLC: Administrative and Regulatory Law Committee Monitor legislation and recommend or review changes to the APA that affect the administrative law practice. Promote better relations between Bar members and hearing officers of government and regulatory agencies and the Administrative Law Court.
ANIM: Animal Law Committee Provide education and analysis of changes and new directions in animal law. Facilitate cooperation with government agencies and non-governmental humane societies and rescue organizations.
CAL: Community Association Law Committee Engage in legislative and public policy initiatives affecting community associations in South Carolina and develop CLE programs addressing this type of practice.
CHIL: Children’s Law Committee Address issues related to children’s legal rights and juvenile justice. Coordinate with other children’s services groups to improve the way the legal system functions in relation to children. Develop CLE seminars and materials on issues affecting children and those who represent them, both as lawyers and GALs.
CLEP: Continuing Legal Education Publications Committee Oversee the development and production of CLE publications and software and recruitment of authors.
CLES: Continuing Legal Education Seminars Committee Oversee continuing legal education efforts through seminars and distance learning products.
CONV: Conventions Committee Enhance CLE programming for the Bar Convention. Consider venue alternatives and generate ideas for social and networking opportunities. Continue to improve the quality of South Carolina Bar conventions and increase attendance.
DIV: Diversity Committee Pursue initiatives to encourage diversity and inclusiveness within the Bar and the legal profession. Identify barriers to participation; hold forums and CLE programming on diversity trends; work with law firms and other entities to increase minority participation; and connect with talented, diverse students.
EDLAW: Education Law Committee Educate members and the public on issues affecting students, teachers and parents in K-12 and post-secondary schools. Monitor legislation affecting education and propose statutory changes.
ELDER: Elder Law Committee Provide education to members of the Bar and the public on issues affecting the elderly and adults with disabilities. Monitor legislation and propose statutory changes.
ETH: Ethics Advisory Committee Help protect your fellow attorneys from potential ethical pitfalls. The Ethics Committee receives ethics inquiries from members of the Bar in the form of anonymous fact patterns and discusses, drafts and produces the ethics opinions.
INHC: In-House Counsel Committee Facilitate involvement and identify common issues among this sector of the Bar’s membership. Identify networking opportunities and practice resources and plan CLE opportunities that focus on issues of concern to in-house practitioners.
INLC: International Law Committee Work with practitioners focusing their efforts on the law as it relates to South Carolina's international business community, immigrants, maritime industry and foreign and offshore investors. Support the USC School of Law's Journal of International Law and Business.
IPI: Intellectual Property and Innovation Committee Focuses on raising awareness of issues in IP, including trademarks, patents, copyrights, international IP protections, trade secrets, corporate formations, employment law, contracts, and innovation. The Committee will offer educational events and networking opportunities for those interested in IP.
LREC: Law Related Education Committee Assist with law related education programs, including middle and high school mock trials and other competitions and teacher workshops. Develop LRE materials for teachers and lawyers. Help select award and scholarship recipients.
LHL: Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee Support the Commission and Director in assisting lawyers and judges who are impaired by alcohol, drugs or depression. The program includes this committee of volunteers who will be trained in recognizing addiction and monitoring those in the program.
LWC: Lawyer Wellness Committee Identify factors that impact lawyer wellness, recommend programs to promote health and wellness of Bar members, and educate the bench and bar about wellness issues and resources.
PRAC: Practice and Procedure Committee Study and make recommendations regarding the rules and law pertaining to practice and procedure. Recommendations are proposed to the House of Delegates. Continue efforts regarding the improvement of the operation of the judicial system.
PROL: Professional Liability Committee Consider issues related to professional liability insurance. Assist Board of Governors in its assessment of preferred carriers and agencies.
PROF: Professional Responsibility Committee Formulate amendments to the Rules of Professional Conduct and propose them to the House of Delegates, which in turn proposes them to the S.C. Supreme Court.
TECH: Technology Committee Provide guidance to Bar members on best practices and identifiy current technology issues affecting the practice of law, such as cyber security.
UPLC: Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee Review allegations of unauthorized law practice. Promote legislation and court actions that enhance the protection of the parties by the prosecution of the unauthorized practice of law.
