POSITION TITLE: Orientation Leader (Summer 2021)
Department: New Student Programs
Reports to: Alie Hallam | Interim Director of New Student Programs
The Orientation Leader position for the Office of New Student Programs at Rhode Island College is a Summer appointment.
Under the supervision of the Orientation staff, this position will provide an array of experiences, including: planning and implementation of Summer orientationprograms; group facilitation; peer education; and developing the knowledge necessary to become a resource for incoming students and their families.
Specific Duties:
Assist in the planning and implementation of Summer Orientation for new first-year students, as well as their
families
Act as a resource through sharing knowledge of RIC, and its programs and services
Aid students in their transition to RIC through communication, support, and knowledge
Facilitation of group activities, workshops, and meetings
Work with staff, faculty, and administration through training and Orientation sessions
Serve as a support system and sounding board for fellow Orientation Leaders
Other duties as assigned

Ability to work well in groups
Demonstrate knowledge of Rhode Island College, and its resources
Communication skills; interpersonal, small groups & large group
Sense of responsibility
Ability to serve as a role model for undergraduate students
Highly motivated, and enthusiastic
Flexibility and adaptability
Good sense of humor preferred
Required Conditions:
Completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at RIC (or 1 semester if transfer)
Be in good academic and judicial standing
Must maintain a 2.7 cumulative GPA throughout their term of appointment.
Compensation & Benefits:
Stipend paid upon completion of Summer Orientation
Room and meal plan during entirety of program (Subject to COVID-19 plans for virtual Orientation)

POSITION TITLE: RIC-100 Peer Mentor (Fall 2021)
Department: New Student Programs
Reports to: Alie Hallam | Interim Director of New Student Programs
FY Peer Mentors serve as an important resource for first-year students beginning with the #New Anchor welcome experience through RIC 100 First Year Experience, a new required fall course. Mentors will actively connect with an assigned group of new students during the fall semester through a variety of experiences designed to enhance and support active participation, a sense of belonging and student success.
Responsibilities:
Serve as a positive role model, advocate and resource for new students at Welcome Weekend and RIC 100 throughout the fall semester
- Assist the instructor of the assigned RIC 100 section to facilitate participation, communication and support as needed
- Be registered for COLL 280 Peer Mentor Practicum (2cr)
- Communicate regularly with assigned first-year students (online and in person) through one-on-one and group meetings
- Facilitate and encourage attendance to all FYE programs
- Participate in all peer mentor trainings, meetings, programs, and activities
- Educate new students about various resources and student services available at the college
- Connect students to Learning for Life’s network of support when appropriate
- Complete all required data and record‐keeping for students served
- Communicate regularly with the Office of New Student Programs
Training Requirements:
- Participate in spring training sessions and training prior to the start of the fall semester.
- Be available to support FYE programming
- Take Peer Mentor Practicum Course in Fall Semester (Wed 1:00-1:40pm)
- Flexibility with in-person or online instruction during COVID-19.
Qualifications:
- Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior in good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0)
- Be in good student conduct standing
- Must be available on Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. – 12:50 p.m. (and/or during other selected class time, hybrid, evening, etc.)
- Must be available for training sessions and Welcome Week Activities (August 25-31)
- Commit to being enrolled at RIC through the fall and spring semesters
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and leadership potential
- Be self-motivated with a positive attitude
- Strong respect and desire to work with and support a diverse and inclusive community
- Ability to work independently and as part of the team of FY Peer Mentors
- Willingness to collaborate with campus partners
