Registration includes participation in the 2018 Historic Third Ward Plein Air contest with the opportunity to submit up to two paintings. Each registered artist will also receive 2 tickets to the VIP Reception (Friday, July 20, 5:00-6:30pm) at Hudson. Reception will include: first look at gallery of Plein Air paintings, passed appetizers, champagne, live music, awards ceremony and cash bar) and complimentary participation in the gallery at Splash Studio July 28-October 12, 2018.
Art Sales (Gallery Weekend at Hudson)
Sales of all paintings on Gallery Night and Day will be collected through Hudson Business Lounge. Hudson will accept payment at a fixed selling price set by the artist. Price set should include sales tax. 25% of sale of piece will be retained by Hudson, 10% will be donated to a local charity. The artist will receive the remaining 65% of the sale (less sales tax). W-9 forms will be collected at registration, as well as waiver of liability. If artist would like painting wrapped following purchase, wrapping materials should be provided by artist.
Art Sales (Splash Studio July 28 - October 12)
Splash Studio (184 N. Broadway) will host the Plein Air Gallery, July 28-October 12, 2018. This opportunity is optional for all artists participating in Plein Air 2018 and is available at no charge. Artists must arrange to move their own piece(s) from Hudson Business Lounge, to Splash Studio on Saturday, July 21 between 4-6pm. All art should have mounting hardware already on piece (Splash will not provide). Sales of all paintings at Splash Studio will be collected by Splash. Splash will accept payment at a fixed selling price set by the artist; price set should include sales tax. 35% of sale of piece will be retained by Splash. The artist will receive the remaining 65% of the sale (less sales tax). W-9 forms will be collected at registration, as well as waiver of liability. If artist would like painting wrapped following purchase, wrapping materials should be provided by artist. Paintings on display at Splash must be picked up no later than October 14, 2018. Paintings not picked up by October 14, 2018 will become the property of Splash Studio.
Pre-Event: Full color ad in the July Gallery Night brochure (30,000 distribution) announcing the event. Email blasts to our mailing list of over 3,000, including OnMilwaukee.com and other media outlets. Postings on Facebook (9,700+ fans), Twitter (28,300+ followers), and Instagram (2,300+ followers). Event flyers placed throughout the Third Ward and other downtown hotspots. Event flyers emailed to you for forwarding to your mailing lists. Post-Event: Photos of all winning pieces will be included in a full-page display ad in the October Gallery Night brochure. Winners will be announced in email blasts to over 3,000 people, OnMilwaukee.com and other news outlets. Winners will be announced on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
There are a lot of distinct places to choose from! Images should portray the life and vitality within the Historic Third Ward District. Boundaries are: Lake Michigan, the river, and Clybourn Street. Pieces depicting a vantage point outside of these boundaries will be disqualified from prizes. Judging will be based on the following: Composition, Use of Color and Capturing the Character of the Historic Third Ward.
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Best Overall, sponsored by Hospitality Democracy (1st Place -$1,000), Best Overall (2nd Place - $500), Best View of Downtown, sponsored by Smoke Shack ($250), Best Architecture, sponsored by Onesto ($250), Best View of the River, sponsored by Blue Bat Kitchen ($250), Best Depiction of Life in the Third Ward, sponsored by Swig ($250).
Registration / Sign-in Dates and Times
Hudson Business Lounge (310 E. Buffalo St) - Saturday, July 14: 10am-6pm; Sunday, July 15: 10am-2pm; Monday, July 16 - Thursday, July 19: 7am-6pm; Friday, July 20: 7am-12pm. Canvases or panels must be "stamped" during sign-in. This insures that the work turned in is done during the event and not prior. Allowed mediums: oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and gouache.
Painting may begin at 10:00am on Saturday, July 14 and ends at 12:00pm on Friday, July 20. Artists can submit up to two paintings. All paintings must be framed and ready for display and judging by 12:00pm on Friday, July 20 at the Hudson Business Lounge. Artists must bring their own easels for display at Hudson.
