Newfoundland Pony Conservancy Center prefers volunteers who are 14 years old or older.  

Experience is not required and some training is available.

VOLUNTEER EXPECTATIONS:

• Believe in and be an active advocate and ambassador for the values, mission and vision of the organization.
• Act in a way that contributes to the effective operation of the sanctuary – and work with fellow Volunteers and staff towards our mission. This includes – but is not limited to:
• Focus on the good of the organization, independent of personal agenda, self-interest, or the influence of others.
• Maintain confidentiality of committee, volunteer, and organization work unless authorized otherwise. Do not speak for the sanctuary unless you are instructed to by the board.
• Support board decisions once these are made.
• Support the organization’s policies and procedures for conducting business.
• Regularly attend Volunteer and committee meetings as requested. Prepare for these meetings by reviewing materials and bringing the materials to meetings. Use conversation as a core business practice, asking strategic questions and participating in dialogue.
• Keep informed about the organization, its issues, and its connection to the community through active participation within the organization and conscientious connection outside the organization.
• Help support the charitable contributions operation of the organization. Specifically:Reach into diverse communities to help identify and cultivate relationships to support the organization as donors, volunteers, and advocates.
• An annual contribution, be it skills, time, expertise, resources, gifts in kind, or monetary, is required, to the best of your ability, as an integral part of working towards our mission. Consider this organization one of your top 2 – 3 charitable commitments.
• Participate in the function of the center by taking on various tasks tailored to your comfort and skills.
• As appropriate, use personal and professional contacts and expertise to benefit the organization, without compromising ethics or trespassing on relationships.
  Be a prepared and an active participant.
• Inform the Board of Directors of the organization of any potential conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived, and abide by the decision of the Board related to the situation.
• Respect the authority of the Board of Directors and staff; and, adhere to the limitations of the board, its committees and individual board members.
• Agree to step down from Volunteer position if unable to fulfill these expectations.

Newfoundland Pony Conservancy Center rules and Guidelines for Volunteers

 

The Newfoundland Pony Conservancy Center (NPCC) is an all volunteer run, non-profit organization. We depend completely on volunteers to help with many aspects of the sanctuary. Our board of directors are also ALL volunteers.

The Newfoundland Pony Conservancy Center is an organization whose mission is to preserve the critically endangered Newfoundland Pony. To do this we ask that when you consider volunteering here that you please leave any “horse knowledge” or “equine expertise” at the door. Please let us train you on what this breed specific organization does and needs for you to do.

We pride ourselves on teaching coexistence, whether it is to coexist with people and ponies, or people to people. Only kindness is allowed. Anything deemed unkind will result in your being asked to leave & possibly not be welcomed back.

We are not a riding establishment. Your volunteer time will not include riding. If that is what you are looking to "earn" here, there are many riding establishments in the area that may be a better fit for you.  We are here to teach about the breed, and to raise money to support our mission through donations. Volunteers represent NPCC and play an important part in our mission

Some things we do NOT do here-

Train ponies. (Only the director decides who gets training and by whom.)
Board ponies
Show ponies or promote showing.
Sell ponies
Give riding lessons.
Give pony rides.
Pay any volunteers.
Receive assistance from any government, corporate, or rare breed organizations.                                                                            
Drama
Speak negatively about the center, and/or the people who volunteer here to anyone but directly to the Director or a board member. The ONLY thing this sort of behavior, gossip, and negativity does is ultimately hurt the ponies.  Our mission is to help this breed survive; all efforts, behaviors, and conduct effect the ponies. Decisions on what is appropriate or not is based on how it effects our mission and ponies, ALWAYS.
