UPPER-LEVEL WRITING 395W COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Writing is a fundamental skill and the University of Rochester is committed to improving undergraduate writing. An important component of undergraduate writing education is the upper level writing (ULW) requirement for all majors. If you choose to register for 395W, we expect a high-quality final report that is well written and effectively communicates the scientific justification and results of their research. This typically comes about as the result of communication between the student and mentor and extensive revision of the document.
While final approval and grade for 395W is determined by the research mentor, to ensure the student meets the ULW requirements, whether a student receives upper-level writing credit that can be used towards their major is made by the coordinators of the individual UPBM majors. To qualify for ULW the final report must be at least six pages in length and undergo at least one edit by the mentor and rewrite that would ideally be done incrementally throughout the semester to enable the student to benefit from the writing experience.
A poster cannot be submitted if the student is using the course to satisfy an upper-level writing requirement.
If the UPBM coordinator decides that a student does not receive ULW credit for the report, the student has the opportunity to take a 0.5 credit 396W course in a subsequent semester. Successful completion of 396W will still require the original research advisor (or equivalent) to edit a first draft of the paper for scientific accuracy.
Additionally, students who are taking a second semester of 395 coursework for upper-level writing credit need to submit an entirely new paper at the end of the second semester. While it is appropriate to include work from a previous semester the second paper must contain at least six page of new prose.
FINAL REPORT OR POSTER REQUIREMENT FOR 395 COURSES: A copy of the final report or a poster is required for all independent research courses. A new (different) report or poster must be submitted each semester a 395 course is taken and may be uploaded to Blackboard by the last day of exams. Independent Research students should be listed on Blackboard by mid-December in the fall and mid-April in the spring semester.
NOTE ABOUT MONETARY COMPENSATION: Please note that students cannot receive monetary compensation for the same work they earn academic credit.
Students may hold a paying job within the same lab; however, the work must be separate from the research project.
