  • INTRODUCTION

    Thank you for participating in the beta testing process for {assessmentName}. You are just one step away from completing the activities and receiving recognition for doing so! Structuring the process is one means by which beta participants can facilitate the development of valid and legally defensible assessments at WGU. Our objective is to collect and analyze assessment data and participant feedback in order to uphold our development process as a fair and reliable indicator of professional competency. In this final step, we ask for your input in helping us to establish the final passing score for {assessmentName}.

    • INSTRUCTIONS (Please read carefully and acknowledge!)
    • WGU uses a well-established and widely executed passing standard methodology: the contrasting groups method. The benchmarks you develop will go through an extensive review process, and once implemented, will be subjected to ongoing analysis and revisions in order to confirm their accuracy. It is expected that beta test participants will become familiar with the contents of this document before completing the beta testing process.

      The purpose of WGUs assessment development program is to assure that students who graduate from a degree program have met certain standards, by accurately measuring the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) taught throughout their course of study. Meeting or exceeding those standards is an indication that a student is qualified to practice a particular occupation or profession. Rationales for maintaining such standards within WGUs assessment development program are that they:

      1.     Assist in identifying students who possess the minimum KSA to perform essential job tasks;

      2.     Assist in maintaining a minimum standard of related skills and competence over time, and

      3.     Provide decision outcomes – consequential validity - for students completing a degree program.

      In order to ensure the consequential validity of WGU assessments, we engage in passing standard studies with the primary purpose of empirically documenting and demonstrating the link between KSAs tested by our assessment products and the activities performed by competent professionals.

    • YOUR TASK
    • During this exercise, you will be asked to imagine an individual whom you would regard as a newly competent professional (i.e., ready to begin working as a professional), with respect to the definitions described in the course and student descriptions, and the collection of competencies defined in the accompanying table (see below). Then, couch the attributes of the individual you have imagined in your own experience of working with and managing competent professionals. And then, answer the following two questions:

      1.     “The passing score for this assessment should be between _____ % correct and _____% correct, for students attempting this assessment on their first attempt.”

      2.     “It is acceptable for between _____% and _____ % of the students to FAIL this assessment on their first attempt.”

      Note: It may help to think of each question as a range, e.g., “I think the passing score should be between X and Y.” And, “I think the acceptable failure rate should be between X and Y.”
