The Department of Theatre and Media Arts offers student grants to support students with the ability to enhance their academic and professional development. These grants are available to TMA majors and minors and are intended to fund scholarly, creative, and professional opportunities such as research, internships, conference participation, Auditions, Graduate School application fees, workshops, and more. Through this program, students are encouraged to expand their education, develop their artistic voice, and engage meaningfully with the broader academic and professional community.
Grant funds are awarded as scholarships and applied directly to a student’s financial account, first covering any university holds. Remaining funds are then deposited if obligations are met. Awards are non-transferable, and recipients must typically be enrolled in at least twelve credits per semester or six credits per term, unless an exception is approved by the department’s executive committee. Applicants must be enrolled, degree-seeking TMA majors or minors (including Acting and Theatre Education pre-majors) during the award year. Per BYU policy, students may not receive scholarships exceeding twice the cost of tuition per semester. Recipients are also required to submit a thank-you note to donors before receiving funding.
Grant funds should be applied for and used before the next application period begins (For example: if you are going to a conference in March, you should apply in the winter period)
Application due dates are as follows:
Winter: January 31
Spring/Summer: March 31
Fall: September 30
Applications received after the due date will be reviewed in the next application period.
Student Grant applications can include proposals for the following:
- Internships
- Auditions
- Graduate School application fees or interviews
- Conferences
- Workshops
- Study Abroad programs outside of TMA
- Projects that are sponsored by a BYU honors program or capstone outside of TMA (i.e. Honors, Global Women Studies, etc.)
- Other professional development opportunities*
*Additional information or justification of a proposal may be requested for proposals that fall under this category.
Since funds are limited, there is intense competition. It will be the responsibility of the faculty mentors, department areas, and the TMA Executive Committee to judge the relative merit of all applications.
Note: Receiving grant funds does not entitle the student to use TMA/BYU resources (i.e. equipment, rooms, theatres, insurance etc.)
Please be aware that grants DO NOT cover the following:
- Film Equipment
- Food
- Personal supplies (i.e. headshot printing, conference supplies, etc)
- Cost of living while in Provo or the nearby areas of Utah
- Classroom supplies
- TMA Study Abroad programs
- New York Showcase
- Personal Film Projects
- Job interviews
- Graduate school campus tours
- Graduate exams and prep classes (i.e. GRE, GMAT, etc.)
The maximum amount a student can receive for this grant is $2000. The final grant amounts are determined by the number of applications approved and the number of funds available.
