Thank you for your interest in joining the Free Range Food Co-op Board of Directors. Serving on the board is one of the most important ways an owner can contribute to FRFC. In the coming years, our owners, through the Board and volunteer teams, will work together to cooperatively develop FRFC into a community-owned grocery store. If you would like to be a part of this mission and believe you can bring energy, knowledge and enthusiasm to the cooperative, please apply to become a member of the FRFC board of directors.
Qualifications
Directors must be primary owners in good standing and committed to the cooperative and its future. We are seeking candidates who can work together as a team as well as take leadership initiative on independent projects.
Term Length
Newly elected directors will serve a one-year term, with the option to be appointed to an additional two years at the end of their first term. If filling a vacancy, the appointed director will complete the remaining length of that term. The terms are staggered so only about a third of the board is elected each year.
Time Commitment
Due to the start-up status of FRFC, directors spend on average 10-15 hours per month on various Board related work. There are two monthly board meetings lasting 1.5 hours each, and communication and team requirements in between meetings. Directors are required participate on at least one team. Team meeting dates, times and workload distribution are established by the separate teams. There are also training and webinar requirements and opportunities for board members throughout the year.
Communication
Communication is essential for sharing information and supporting the work of other board members and volunteers in between meetings. Board members should be accessible by phone, text and/or email to other board members, team members and the general ownership. Many board materials are provided and worked on electronically, therefore directors should have access to a computer and regular internet access.
Duties and Responsibilities
The work of the board varies based on where the co-op is in the development process, but there are many areas and tasks that can be chosen based on experience, interest and expertise. For a more thorough idea of the purpose and responsibilities of the board, see the Board Member Position Description.
