Dear fellow book enthusiasts,
The Daily Tar Heel is happy to announce our second book club event, this time focusing on the rise of fascism and the use of images to convey powerful messages. That is why we decided to pick Maus, a graphic novel about Nazism and hatred, for this event. As a newspaper, we have to be aware of how people are consuming media, and the graphic novel, while having its roots in the past, is a new medium in the world of academic works. The books are easier to read, but when mixed with striking imagery, the message is just as, if not more, powerful than what the standard novel format. The discussion will include both how Fascism takes hold in a society and how popular art can combat its rise.
