2018 Summer Camp Staff Application
Thank you for your interest in being a part of Team NOVA at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational and Conference Center! It is because of YOU that over 2,000 youth will have an amazing week of camp this summer.
The 4-H Center sits on 229 acres in Front Royal, Virginia, and has offered Junior 4-H Camp to youth in Northern Virginia for more than 30 years. Our programs stress the 4-H philosophy of "learn by doing", which means participants are actively learning during their experiences due to full engagement in the activities. The 4-H Center is a large facility, and our average weekly number of Junior 4-H Camp participants is approximately 250+ youth.
We believe the 4-H Center programs and services give us the opportunity to positively impact our community. For that reason, we consider a positive attitude and the ability to be friendly and caring toward youth and adults to be as important as previous education, training, or certification.
What is expected of a summer camp staff member at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational and Conference Center?
Typically, 4-H Center summer camp staff have completed at least one year of college. Strong candidates also have work and/or volunteer experience in 4-H, teaching, and/or youth programming. Regardless of previous work and/or volunteer experience, successful employment at the 4-H Center requires certain personal attributes, including:
Friendliness / Open-mindedness
Interest in teaching and learning
All staff are also required to attend an unpaid week of training refered to as State Staff Training. This program is designed to emulate a week of camp and sucessful completion of the week is required to become a summer staff member.
What are the benefits of being a summer camp staff member?
Weekly salary (additional opportunities for programming and/or lifeguarding)
Meals (all food is provided from Sunday lunch through Thursday lunch)
Required staff apparel (free-of-charge)
Paid training (approximately 14 days)
Weekend lodging and access to the 4-H Center pool
American Red Cross Lifeguard certification

Meals, on-site lodging, and a weekly salary are offered all summer long. Your salary largely depends on experience. Staff members are housed on-site for the entire summer and may only leave during designated times throughout each week. The work week usually ranges from 10am Sunday through 6pm Thursday with some variations depending on the week.
Staff members are required to teach classes in the mornings. The subject areas include Leather Craft, Challenge Course, Shooting Education, Performing Arts, Canoeing, and Climbing Wall - just to name a few. Class specific training will be provided to all staff members to help successfully lead classes. Previous experience in particular areas will be considered when making instructor assignments. During the day when classes are not in session, staff members will be responsible for daily operations of the camp, to include (but are not limited to): program planning, filling water coolers, general maintenance, helping with nightly campfires and lifeguarding at the pool. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is offered free-of-charge to those who require the certification for their class and to those who are interested but are not required to have it. All staff members are required to obtain American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED; this training is provided during training and free-of-charge.
