The American Family Fitness swim lesson program is structured along the guidelines of the “Learn-to-Swim Program” of the American Red Cross.
Swim lessons are essential to having a safe, fun time in every aquatics environment, for all ages. Our instructors help participants become comfortable in water, and teach personal water safety, in addition to swimming skills. This orients participants to gain greater independence, comfort, and fosters a lifetime of enjoyment in and around water.
Parent/Child: This class helps parents familiarize their young children, ages 6 months up to 3 years, to the water. This basic water orientation prepares them to swim in the Preschool Aquatic or Learn-to-Swim courses. This class also gives parents safety information and techniques to help their children gain comfort in the water. Parents must be in the water with their children.
Preschool: Participants must be 3 years of age by the first session date. Our preschool levels promote developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills for children ages 3, 4, and 5 years old.
Level 1: Introduction to water skills teaches participants basic personal safety & elementary aquatic skills to help them feel comfortable in the water, and to enjoy the water safely.
Level 2: Fundamental aquatic skills enables participants to have success with swimming. They also learn to float without support, and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills that lay the foundation for future stokes.
Level 3: Stroke Development builds on previous learned skills, by learning the front crawl, and elementary backstroke. They are introduced to scissors and dolphin kicks. They also build on the fundamentals of treading water.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement allows particpants to gain confidence during swim lessons, improve strokes, and gain additional aquatic skills.
Adult: Adult learners can be any skill level. These classes help to gain confidence in and around the water; basic aquatic skills and swimming strokes are introduced. Students learn skills and concepts needed to stay safe in water, and to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. Adult lessons focus on learning the basics, improving skills and swimming strokes. Students improve proficiency, refine strokes, build endurance, and learn to swim for fitness.
