Stewardship of treasure involves reflecting on one’s financial resources and prayerfully deciding to give a generous, proportionate, and sacrificial gift for the ministry of the parish, the diocese and other charities. This gift is from the “first fruits of our labor” rather than from what is left over after our needs are met. Such a gift is an act of faith, an act of stewardship.
Parishioners in the Diocese of Wichita strive to commit 8% of one’s income to the parish and 2% to other charities. If this goal cannot be realized now, it is encouraged to begin at some percentage and to prayerfully reexamine it each year. Here is how it works:
Earning $500 a week, would look like:
$500 x .08 (8%) = $40 a week to my parish
$500 x .02 (2%) = $10 a week to other charities
Earning $4,000 a month, would look like:
$4,000 x .08 (8%) = $320 a month to my parish
$4,000 x .02 (2%) = $80 a month to other charities
