Preservation Award: Any residential, public or commercial property that has been designated a Somerville Local Historic District Property and has had qualifying preservation work completed on it between January 2017 and December 2018 is eligible for recognition.
Director’s Award: In addition, any structure or building built before 1966 and which had qualifying exterior preservation work completed on it between January 2017 and December 2018, may be eligible as part of the 2019 Preservation Awards Program.
PRESERVATION & DIRECTOR’S AWARDS
Winners of Preservation and Director’s Awards will receive an architectural drawing or original art of their honored property created by students in the Somerville High School Drafting and Art Departments.
Students may visit the property in the wintertime to take measured drawings and photographs of the exterior. These visits will enable the students to accurately draw each building’s unique architectural details, as well as learn more about the diversity of architectural styles and historical assets of their community. The winners may also be interviewed and appear in local media as part of the City’s Preservation Month, and the final artwork will be displayed in local exhibit venues such as City Hall, the Somerville office of Century Bank, and the Somerville Armory.
The awards will be presented to both the owners and the students at a formal ceremony held at the Somerville Museum at the culmination of Somerville’s Historic Preservation Month in May 2019.
JUDGING PROCESS AND CRITERIA
A subcommittee of the Historic Preservation Commission will review each application and the attached submissions before making a site visit. Members of the Historic Preservation Commission are not eligible to participate in this program as they will judge each property based upon the following criteria:
whether the work is consistent with the building’s original style and character;
the compatibility of the work with the rest of the property;
extent of work accomplished, large job or small, to return property to its best condition; and
the contribution or inspiration that the work gives to the surrounding neighborhood.
All decisions by the judges will be final.
