What’s your body “saying” right now? Kinesics is the study of nonverbal communication, our “body language.” As for its history, kinesics is a fairly recently developed field of social anthropology. In practice, the field of kinesics examines our body language in two modes: movement and space.

Historically, kinesics is a relatively recent field in social anthropology, having first been developed during the 1950s by Dr. Ray Birdwhistell. He and other anthropologists have been observing body language on all continents and across gender and social class. After more than sixty years’ work, these experts have concluded that our body language is usually more “honest” than our verbal communication. Our words may lie, but our bodies unconsciously tell the truth.

When we look at body language in practice, we study it in two ________: movement and space. The first of these two categories of body language is movement. However, in Japan this staring could be considered __________. Besides eye contact, other kinds of body movement include our posture, hand gestures, and arm- and leg crossing.
