Advertising and Digital Marketing: The Advertising and Digital Marketing Intern will be learning about Advertising and Digital Marketing research, planning, execution and analysis as well as administrative tasks. This person will be responsible for: assisting with media research and maintaining media planning tools, maintaining the marketing calendar, executing social media ads, drafting creative briefs for ads, drafting emails in Mailchimp, pulling and analyzing metrics for all campaigns, maintaining all-books records (ad plan, keywords, similar books), and assisting with billing/accounting records. This person should have some experience in marketing concepts, a strong analytical background with experience using excel/google sheets, strong communication and writing skills, and the ability to communicate professionally via email and in person. The internship is up to 20 hours per week.
Books Acquisitions: The Books Acquisitions intern will work in the department responsible for contracting, receiving, and assessing both book proposals and manuscripts for potential publication. This intern will be responsible for tasks such as general manuscript preparation, placing orders with our warehouse, general data entry into our database, possible long term projects which might include researching permissions or looking into grant funding opportunities, and a variety of other tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about scholarly publishing in a collaborative environment.
Books Editorial: The Books Editorial internship will provide experience with a variety of editorial tasks, including checking page proofs, editing indexes, proofreading jacket copy, reviewing prepress proofs, and handling corrections for reprints. The intern will also learn about the editorial technology that we are now using at the MIT Press. College graduates and graduate students with copy editing experience and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style are strongly preferred.
Books Publicity: Books Publicity interns will learn about marketing and promoting books to the media. Their primary responsibilities include pitching professional books to the media, logging and distributing book reviews, maintaining and updating the reviews database, assisting with galley and press release mailings, working with the MIT Press blog and podcast, researching journals and other media, inputting reviewer requests, and other general assistance. Office and/or publishing experience, as well as familiarity with FileMaker, Cision, or other database software, is a plus, but not required.
Exhibitions Marketing: The intern will assist the exhibits program in preparation of all upcoming conferences, including primarily those where MIT Press has a booth presence. Under exhibits, the intern will learn the importance of academic meetings for both acquisitions and marketing/promotional detail in university press publishing. The end goal is to understand the importance of minutiae in marketing. Tasks will include: packing booth materials, keeping inventory of supplies and communicating any reorder needs, sorting returned conference materials post-meeting, creating order forms, proofreading conference advertising/promotional material copy, and preparing invoices for the accounting team. The intern should be able to lift 50 lbs. The candidate should also have a strong organizational skills, and be well versed in Microsoft Office suite. The ideal candidate should also have a strong ability to communicate professionally via email and in person. This internship is up to 15 hours per week.
Institutional Marketing: The intern will assist in marketing MIT Press journals and digital products to librarians, scholars, and students through creative promotions, market research, and departmental support. Tasks include crafting releases for podcasts and news items, contributing to our ongoing From the Archive Friday and Spotlight on Science features, preparing promotional materials for conferences and events, managing routine updates to our website, assisting with our annual marketing summaries and Journals catalog, and taking point on various projects as needed. The intern should be well versed in various social media platforms (especially Instagram, Medium, and LinkedIn) and the Microsoft Office suite (particularly Excel). The candidate should also have strong internet research skills, a strong analytical approach, and the ability to communicate professionally via email and in person. This internship is up to 15 hours per week.
Professional Books and Journals Marketing: This marketing intern will have the opportunity to be involved in many areas of professional books and journals promotion. Daily tasks may include proofreading book catalogs, brochures, and other promotional materials for accuracy; ordering and sorting mailing lists; conducting ongoing marketing research; reviewing marketing analytics and advising on buyer behavior; creating and executing social ads on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other digital marketing channels; editing and optimizing digital ads, reporting on performance of digital ads; assisting with seasonal planning; attending marketing department functions and meetings; and assisting the books marketing staff on a variety of other projects. The Marketing intern will also have the opportunity to become involved in the department’s grassroots initiative, which seeks to identify new audiences of readers and build lasting relationships with organizations outside the Press. Candidates should be familiar with MS Office and have strong proofreading, writing, communications, and internet research skills. Previous marketing experience and familiarity with Filemaker a plus, but not required.
