This is an application to join the pool of invigilators employed by the Exams Office at the University of Essex.
Exams take place at various times throughout the year, although the busiest period, where the most work is available, runs from mid-May until early June.
Invigilators assist the Senior Invigilator, who is responsible for a given exam venue. All invigilation staff are responsible for the good order of exams and ensuring that all candidates enjoy the optimum conditions for sitting the exams. This includes ensuring that candidates do not communicate with each other once inside the exam room, being vigilant for suspected cheating and other unfair practices, regulating the movement of candidates in and out of the room during the exam, laying out question papers and other materials and collecting the completed scripts at the end of the exam, and responding to problems and queries raised by candidates.
Exams run daily during the exam period, usually at 9am and 2pm (2.15pm on Fridays), and vary in duration between one and three hours. Invigilators are required to report for work between 30 and 60 minutes before the start of the exam, and are required to stay for up to 30 minutes at the end of the exam. You may work full or part days.
Invigilators are asked to indicate their availability ahead of the exam period. Work will then be allocated based on that availability and the staffing requirements on each day, and a schedule of work will be issued.
The invigilator role is paid at £10.90 per hour.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a short interview. Successful candidates will then need to attend a mandatory training session in March.
