Gritman Medical Center Auxilian Maurine Cherrington was born and raised in Iowa and later graduated from Iowa State University where she met her husband, Virgil Cherrington, a professor emeritus at the University of Idaho. They were married December 24, 1928 in Spokane, Washington, and moved to Moscow where she became an active member of our community.
Maurine was a charter member of the Gritman Auxiliary and secretary of the Gritman Hospital Board. She was a member of the Methodist Church; Beta Theta Phi chapter of Alpha Phi; and a 54-year member of Chapter O, PEO, where she held all offices.
After residing at Good Samaritan Village for more than 20 years, on April 16, 1997, she died at the age of 92. However, her love and generosity survived, as expressed in her bequest to Gritman Medical Center and the Gritman Auxiliary.
The Gritman Auxiliary, an organization of volunteers at Gritman Medical Center, sponsors this scholarship. The primary criterion for award of the Maurine Cherrington Scholarship is outstanding achievement in such areas as academics, fine arts, performing arts, athletics, school activities, and community service.
