• PMTC - KRTS Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Scholarship - 2021

  • PMTC will award a PMTC Member with a Professional Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Scholarship which will cover the costs for the recipient to complete a full training program through KRTS, or another registered trainingprovider should the candidate be from outside of Ontario.

    This program is an intensive minimum 200-hour course, which when completed, will arm the new Professional Driver with a high level of training, as set by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) and the Truck Training Schools Associate of Ontario (TTSAO) mandatory requirements.


    These standards will provide the student with the skills and confidence necessary to become a successful Professional driver. The award will help promote investment in the training needs of our great industry.

    Scholarship Eligibility

    To be deemed eligible to apply for, and receive, a PMTC Professional Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Scholarship candidates must meet the following criteria:

    1. Must be employed by a current PMTC member company, or be a child of a PMTC member company employee.
    2. Must have a conditional job offer as a professional driver, pending successful completion of the PMTC
      Professional Truck Driver Training Program.
    3. Must have no more than 3 points listed against their current MVR.
    4. Must have no impaired driving, dangerous, careless driving, or similar type convictions in the previous 3 years.
    5. Must have no criminal code convictions, or must have received a pardon or waiver.
    6. Must be nominated by his or her member company.
    7. The employer must submit a letter stating why they think their nominee is a good candidate for the scholarship, and what succession plan they have in mind for the graduate.
    8. The nominee must submit a resume that at minimum states their education, work history, and any volunteer or community service work performed.
    9. The nominee must submit a 650 to 1000-word essay stating why they think they are a good candidate for the scholarship, and what their own personal goals are within the transportation industry.


    Additional Criteria and Guidelines

    a. The leading candidate for the scholarship must complete an Industry Needs Assessment (INA) with KRTS prior to being awarded the scholarship.

    b. Once the scholarship has been awarded, the student will have a meeting with the PMTC and the accredited training school to go over requirements, scheduling, and ensure the student gets properly enrolled.

    c. The individual, or their company, are required to pay the school the costs upfront, up to $5,000 and once the student has successfully completed the course, the PMTC will reimburse the student or company, as applicable.
    *If recipient resides outside of Ontario, PMTC will pay up to $5,000 directly to the selected, accredited training provider, and the student may be required to pay the balance remaining to the training provider (this training provider will be selected by PMTC, not the scholarship recipient).

    d. If the student is unable to complete the training as a result of a driving conviction, the full cost of the course will be borne by them, and will not be the responsibility of the PMTC, or the accredited training school.


    The recipient will be selected by a panel that consists of 1 PMTC fleet or driver agency representative, 1 PMTC associate representative, 1 KRTS representative (or school representative if recipient from outside of Ontario), and the PMTC president. The president will oversee the program, but will only vote in the case of a tie.

    Scoring of the application will be done as follows:

    • Employer Nomination letter = 35%
    • Nominee Application letter = 35%
    • Resume/Work history =20%
    • Community Service Work = 10%

    This application must be verified by a Supervisor to ensure your company understands its financial requirement in the event that you do not complete Professional Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Scholarship as is required under this scholarship. Applications submitted without the supervisor’s signature, date, company name and contact information will not be accepted.
