  • I should like to request that a Board of Examiners be constituted to adminster to me the Ph.D. General Examination. The fields in which I wish to be examined and the examiners I prefer are as follows:

  • I have discussed my choice of fields with the following faculty member(s):

  • Requirements for taking the General Examination for the Ph.D. Degree

  • 1. Completion of at least 16 half courses, with a grade of B- (B minus) or better, of which at least 8 must be content courses. No more than 6 can be language courses and no more than 3 can be SAT/UNSAT. List the courses below. Students who entered after the RSEA program can include up to 8 half courses taken while a student in RSEA.

  • Have you met your language requirements in another fashion or have you demonstrated language competency by other means, such as using primary sources? If so, please describe. 

  • 3. Two substantial seminar papers are required for completion of the Ph.D. At least one must be in the candidate's primary field. Papers that satisfy this requirement: 

    a.) Make use of text(s) written in the primary research language(s), i.e. one or more of the East Asian Languages

    b.) Draw upon signifcant secondary soruces relevant to the subject. 

    c.) Receive at least the grade of A- (A minus) from the instructor of the course for which the paper was written.
