  • Marlin Nation Orientation (MNO) Mission

    MNO provides students and their families with knowledge of academic policies, student support services, and other resources that ease the transition into a small, private, liberal arts university. This is a two-part program. Marlin Nation Orientation for students and their families takes place in June. Marlin Nation Orientation: College 101 takes place in August.

    June MNO dates: June 20 and June 23

    August MNO: College 101 dates: August 22-24

    Orientation Leader Position Description

    We select a group of exemplary, dedicated, and diverse students to assist with MNO. Serving as an Orientation Leader is a great distinction and rewarding opportunity. Please review our expectations and schedule. Make sure you can fully commit to all aspects of the position before applying.

    Minimum Qualifications and Responsibilities

    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
    • Good disciplinary standing
    • No VWU Honor Code violations
    • Commitment to arrive on time and attend the required training sessions, orientation meetings, MNO in June and College 101 in August (no exceptions)
    • Willingness to focus on and serve our guests
    • Desire to work with diverse students and families
    • Professionalism, strong work ethic, and initiative
    • High energy, positive attitude, LOVE FOR VWU!
    • Returning to VWU for fall 2025

    Typical Orientation Leader Tasks

    • Greet guests and help them find campus locations (indoors and outdoors)
    • Facilitate individual and group conversations about academic and social aspects of campus
    • Answer questions and explain general studies requirements, major courses of study, and electives
    • Provide administrative support (ex. check-in tables)
    • Move and set up supplies
    • Attend all MNO sessions as directed by staff and remain attentive during sessions
    • Assist with first-year move-in and community-building activities (College 101 - August Only)

    Selection Process Overview

    1. Review Orientation Leader information and application.
    2. Complete the application.
    3. Some applicants will be invited via email to interview. 
    4. Successful applicants will receive offers via email by spring break.

    Compensation and Benefits

    • $13.50/hour 
    • Free VWU swag (ex. Orientation Leader t-shirt)
    • Optional on-campus housing during the MNO program from June 18-24
    • Early move-in for fall residents on August 21
    • Meals provided during orientation dates
