A "RAID" is two or more devices configured as one large drive. If you're not sure, you almost certainly do not have a RAID (the only exception is if you have an Apple "Fusion Drive" in your iMac; often people are unaware this is actually a two-drive RAID).

Examples of encryption software: Apple's FileVault, BitLocker, PGP Desktop, McAfee Endpoint/SafeBoot, and TrueCrypt. Many newer Western Digital *external* hard drives are encrypted by default from the factory using "SmartWare" (it's impossible to disable). If your *external* Western Digital drive has SmartWare (including "My Passport" and "My Book" drives), it is encrypted.

The hard drive's metal "cover" is not the same as an external "enclosure." The "cover" is part of the bare drive and protects the platters, while the "enclosure" encapsulates the hard drive and contains the USB/power connectors. If you're not sure, see the section below entitled "Hard Drive Cover Opened Rate." If you have an SSD or flash device, click "No."

"Internal" drives are bare drives (with SATA, IDE, ATA, SATA, OR SCSI interfaces). "External" drives are inside an enclosure and typically USB, eSATA, Firewire, or Ethernet (NAS). If you have a Flash Drive, SD/Micro SD card, CFast/CF Card, or SSD, or another kind of device, click "Internal."

Our rate for deleted, overwritten, and format recoveries is due upfront and non-refundable and we'll recover all possible files. If no files are recoverable, we'll refund your payment (minus a $100 labor fee). For more information, see the section below entitled "Deleted Files/Formatted Hard Drive."

We exclude our "$100 Encryption" and "$100 USB-PCB" fees for deleted/overwritten/format recoveries on most drives*. However, if we determine that your drive needs to be cloned before we can recover your deleted/missing files, these fees will apply if applicable.

*FEE INCREASE FOR WESTERN DIGITAL EXTERNAL DRIVES*
If you have a Western Digital SMR drive, the cost for a format or deleted files recovery is $500. Many Western Digital EXTERNAL drives released since 2018 are SMR drives. These drives require much more effort to recover (thanks to TRIM) once they have been formatted or files have been deleted. Email us to confirm if you have an SMR drive.

For drives with previously opened covers, we charge an up-front/non-refundable $100 "open cover" fee. This fee is put towards your total bill (not "in addition to"). For more info about our "open cover" fee, see the section below entitled "Hard Drive Cover Opened Rate."

If your drive is still inside your computer, and your computer is difficult to open (including, but not limited to: iBook, PowerBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, All-in-one PC, Microsoft Surface Tablet), there may be a non-refundable $75-$150 fee for removing the hard drive. We can only perform data recovery with direct access to the bare hard; therefore, it must be removed from the computer before we can start our recovery process.

The following only applies to "spinning" hard drives (not SSDs, Flash Drives, SD/Micro SD cards, Cfast/CF Cards):

About 25% of drives we receive have bad heads (these are most often drives that have been dropped and/or are clicking). We always try to provide our customers with the option of an affordable "partial" recovery, by disabling the bad head(s) and recovering data using the remaining good heads.

However, sometimes the only way to recover any data is by replacing parts (i.e.; "heads") inside the drive. In these cases, we will offer you the option of paying for the necessary donor part after we find the best matching drive online. You can also decline our recovery attempt (for no charge, excluding up-front fees) if the cost of donor parts is too expensive.

If we recover less than 99% of the sectors on your device, you may decline our recovery for a $100 labor fee. If no files can be recovered, there is no charge (excluding "open cover" fee, if applicable). The price shown includes shipping/transfer drive, if applicable. Price shown does NOT include tax for transfer drive (CA residents) or donor drive cost (if required).
