    Bondage Soup is a 12-month, in-person immersive rope education program in Portland, Oregon.

    Our progressive curriculum takes tying partnerships from little or no rope experience through foundational skills, harnesses, suspension, and suspension transitions. Each month builds on the last through instruction, practice, repetition, feedback, and learning together as a cohort.

    The Bondage Soup Community is also more than a 12-month program. It is an ongoing rope education community that includes current cohort members, graduates, instructors, GAs, and participants in Bondage Soup programs including Pressure Cooker, Test Kitchen, and Soup Kitchen.

    The Recipe Book explains how Bondage Soup works, what we teach, how we learn, what we expect from one another, attendance and practice requirements, proficiency expectations, graduation requirements, and what it means to participate in the Bondage Soup community.

    The application is not intended to repeat everything in the Recipe Book. Your responses should reflect that you have read it, understand what you are applying for, and have considered whether Bondage Soup is a good fit for you and your tying partner.

  • ABOUT YOU

  • YOUR TYING PARTNERSHIP

    Bondage Soup is designed for tying partnerships. Both people in the partnership participate actively in the learning process. The person tying and the person being tied each bring different knowledge, observations, communication, feedback, and responsibilities to the work. EACH PERSON MUST COMPLETE THEIR OWN APPLICATION.

  • YOUR ROPE EXPERIENCE

    Bondage Soup begins at the beginning. You do not need to arrive with a particular collection of ties, harnesses, or suspension experience. We want to understand what experience you are bringing with you, not determine whether you already know enough.

  • WHY BONDAGE SOUP?

    Bondage Soup is one of several learning experiences within the Bondage Soup community. BONDAGE SOUP is our 12-month progressive program beginning with foundational skills. PRESSURE COOKER is 6-month adapted and accelerated Bondage Soup experience whose curriculum begins with proficiency in tying a fully structured futomomo. TEST KITCHEN is a 6-month program that creates a different learning environment for experienced rope practitioners to experiment, refine, problem solve, and create. Understanding these differences matters because we want you to choose the learning experience that fits where you are and what you want from your rope practice.

  • LEARNING TOGETHER

    Bondage Soup is a progressive cohort. You will learn alongside the same people throughout the year. You will practice, make mistakes, receive feedback, observe other tying partnerships, ask questions, and support other people as they learn. Being part of Bondage Soup requires more than showing up once a month.

  • PRACTICE AND COMMITMENT

    Bondage Soup requires regular practice between intensives. The curriculum is progressive. What you learn one month becomes part of what you need for the next. Practice is therefore part of participating in Bondage Soup, not something that happens only when you have extra time.
  • Realistically, how much time can you and your partner commit to practicing together each week?*

  • WHEN LIFE HAPPENS

    We understand that people get sick, work schedules change, emergencies happen, and life does not always cooperate with a 12-month curriculum. At the same time, each intensive builds on the one before it. Missing an intensive means missing curriculum that the rest of the cohort will continue building upon. As explained in the Recipe Book, any missed intensive requires a make-up before the next intensive. It is the partnership’s responsibility to arrange the required make-up with an instructor. Make-up classes are held virtually and are offered at an additional cost. Both partners are required to attend the make-up together.

  • PROFICIENCIES AND GRADUATION

    Bondage Soup is not completed simply by reaching December. Throughout the year, tying partnerships demonstrate proficiency in the skills being developed. Proficiencies are opportunities to show repeatability, receive feedback, identify what still needs work, and demonstrate readiness to continue building on the curriculum. Graduation is earned by meeting the expectations of the program, completing required proficiencies and make-ups, and participating in the graduation performance.

  • COMMUNITY

    Bondage Soup began in 2018 with the belief that learning rope is better when we learn together and share what we know. The community now extends beyond any individual cohort. Graduates return to practice, mentor, GA, teach, perform, interview future applicants, participate in Pressure Cooker, Test Kitchen, and Soup Kitchen, share what they learn elsewhere, and support the people coming after them. There is no requirement that everyone contribute in the same way. We do expect people to understand that Bondage Soup is something we build together.

  • THE LARGER BONDAGE SOUP COMMUNITY

    Graduation does not create an obligation to become a GA, instructor, mentor, performer, or community leader. It does mean that you become part of a community built around sharing knowledge and supporting continued learning. Some graduates stay closely involved. Others participate occasionally. Some become GAs or instructors. Some continue their education through Pressure Cooker, Test Kitchen, or Soup Kitchen. Some take what they learned into other rope communities and bring new knowledge back.

  • ACCESS AND LEARNING NEEDS

    Bondage Soup is an immersive, hands-on cohort experience. Intensives can involve extended periods of instruction, tying, observation, conversation, movement, noise, and group interaction. We want applicants to have enough information to decide whether that environment works for them and to begin conversations about accommodations before the cohort starts.

  • Sharing information here does not affect whether you are considered for the cohort. This question gives us an opportunity to begin a conversation about what may or may not be possible within a volunteer-run group learning environment.

  • BEFORE YOU SUBMIT

    Bondage Soup is a significant commitment to yourself, your tying partner, and the people learning alongside you. Before submitting your application, please talk with your partner about the full year, including attendance, weekly practice, transportation, communication, receiving feedback, proficiency expectations, make-ups, and the graduation performance. Both partners should be choosing this experience.
