  • Below is a listing of landscape design themes used in our local landscaping projects. It is also common to do a hybrid theme using for example…a formal tree-lined driveway with formal planting layouts along a front walkway and transitioning to a more flowing Northwest design in the backyard area. Go to the photo galleries on our website eteellc.com to see these different designs in landscapes we have installed.

    •                                                                                                     Northwest – These designs use conifer evergreen accents, with deciduous shade trees and shrubs for seasonal color. These landscapes typically lean on ornamental grasses for design continuity and long blooming perennials for balanced color palates. The use of flowing lines between lawn and planters are used to soften hard edges of patios or other architectural features.

    • Cottage – These designs are more colorful and random than a Northwest design. They would typically use more deciduous than conifer trees for accent and shade. The use of evergreen broadleaves or grasses in random spacings serve to break up the masses of color. A true cottage garden is a hodgepodge of colors throughout the season. A hybrid cottage design would use mass groupings of flowing color grouped by plant type. Lawns serve to create pathways for access and a framework for the cottage garden.

    • Formal – Think English garden with structured rows of boxwood and lavender, or boxwood hedged rose gardens. The use of evergreen or deciduous trees lining driveways or along property borders helps create formal lines. Flowers in raised box planters help create 3-dimensional lines. Lawns are used to connect the landscaped areas and create open space between the formal features.

    • Xeriscape / Low Maintenance -  Low maintenance and landscaping in the same sentence is mostly an oxymoron but use of Xeriscape features can help.  These designs rely heavily on rock boulders and rock mulch groundcover with sparse drought-tolerant plantings to help break the expanses of rock.  These designs need to be well thought out, so they do not overpower or seem too harsh in contrast to your home’s architectural feel.

  • Please take photos and email to us to help explain your project!  Take some of both the entire area and close-ups for detail.  Try to take the photos in a natural viewing angle that includes some reference points such as property lines or building corners.  We can use these photos to help us gain some familiarity with your place prior to showing up on the initial consultation.   We can also use these to create a quick photo rendering for an initial design conversation starter to help kick start the process!
