When volunteering at the shelter, volunteers must be able to react quickly and rationally, as animals can sometimes be unpredictable. Volunteers who work with animals must have the ability to restrain animals for their own safety, the safety of others and the safety of the animals. YCHS reserves the right to place volunteers in areas best suited to their abilities and restrictions, and to reject volunteers whose participation at events or programs sponsored by YCHS could potentially place the participant, the animals or other individuals at risk or harm.
While the YHS has a live release rate of 95% or above, there are times when the decision to euthanize is in the best interest of the animal. It is critical for volunteers who do not make euthanasia decisions to understand the pain, emotion and guilt associated with this role. The decision-makers face a difficult task and their decision must be respected, even if it is different from your own.
When volunteering at the Barkin' Basement, volunteers need to always be aware that they are representing the Yancey Humane Society to the public. Professional demeanor and dress are required.
