ADOPTION POLICIES
If your pets are not spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations or on heartworm prevention your application will be automatically denied.
If you are interested in adopting any animal from our rescue, the first step is to submit an adoption application. The application can be mailed back in to PO Box 474, Demopolis, AL 36732 or simply submit the form on the option below.
Once the application is received, the approval process will take 10-14 days and you will be contacted as soon as it is completed. As part of our approval process: (1) we verify home ownership or get approval from your landlord. We do this because one of the top ten reasons animals are surrendered is “landlord does not allow pets”, and (2) we also check on working relationship with a veterinarian for any current or previously owned pets. This shows us your intent to provide any needed medical attention for the new pet and that you will comply with state laws.
We will require: (1) that all adults living in the household have given their consent to adopt an animal, (2) that you have a valid state ID with your current address, (3) that you be at least 21 years of age, and (4) that we do a two-week trial to assure the fit is satisfactory.
General Information:
All dogs listed on our social media sites are available for adoption, and are seeking loving forever homes. When you are applying to adopt, please be considerate of our process, and we will do our best to communicate with you in an appropriated pace. We are 100% volunteer-based, but we will make every attempt to reply to all emails and phone calls in a timely manner.
The decision to place one of our dogs in an adoptive home is not one that we take lightly. We reserve the right to deny any applications. We do not do same day adoptions. We do not operate on a first come first serve basis, as it is our goal to find the absolute best fit for both our dogs and the potential adopters nor will we stop accepting applications on that dog until it has officially been adopted. In the event that the adopter is no longer able or willing to care for the adopted dog, the adopter understands that the dog MUST be returned to Bigbee Humane Society. Please note that this is stipulated in the adoption contract and Bigbee Humane Society will take legal action should it become necessary.
Process:
Home based meet and greet: After the application has been approved, a home based meet and greet will be done by one of the Bigbee Humane Society volunteers. This is to provide the opportunity for the dog and the adopter to interact in a home-based environment and make sure it’s a good fit for both the dog and the new family.
Contract: If the meet and greet goes well and is deemed a good fit, we will move forward with the adoption contract which details our policies and procedures regarding Bigbee Humane Society dog. You will be given a copy of the adoption contract as well as all appropriate veterinary records.
Adoption fee:
· $150 for puppies up to 6 months of age
· $125 for dogs 6 months of age to 6 years old
· $75 for dogs 7 years and older
***We reserve the right to charge an adoption fee up to $500 for breed specific or purebred dogs, regardless of age***
We incur significant expenses to rescue each dog in our care, such as veterinary treatment & surgeries, food, primary care etc. We do not profit from our adoption fees, our adoption fee does not begin to cover the expenses we have for each dog. When you adopt a dog from Bigbee Humane Society you are not “buying” a dog, your donation/adoption fee not only goes toward to care of your adoptive dog but helps to make it possible for us to further our mission in rescuing dogs and placing them into forever homes. Adoption donations can be made with cash, check, paypal or venmo.
All Bigbee Humane Society adopted dogs receive the following:
*spay/neuter
*age-appropriate vaccinations
*deworming
*monthly flea prevention
*monthly heartworm prevention -
*heartworm treatment if needed
Please note that we are unable to make any guarantees of future health, temperament, size, or breed of your adopted dog. We do our absolute best to create safe and healthy environments for the dogs while in our care. We expect adopters to do the same.
